Title should read 5.7x28
Was thinking of something different and took a look at the 5.7x28 round and would like a bolt action. Other than the Remington 541 or 581 being converted to a single shot is there anyone out there using something different for a bolt action on this cartridge? I think it is a neat little cartridge.
Anybody else have one?
thanks

My suggestion would be to go with a .22 Hornet. It's a little more powerful than the 5.7x28, is chambered in a few nice bolt action guns, is a lot easier to find brass for and is much more hand loader friendly.

I have a 5.7x28 pistol upper from AR57, I like enough I ordered their rifle length upper. And just found an FNH 57 pistol. Nice round, suppressed or not.

Here's what I've heard (no personal experience).

PTG supposedly makes a 5.7x28 bolt head for Rem 700s
Savage used to list a walking varminter in 5.7x28, no idea if the custom shop still offers it
Several barrel makers list the 5.7x28 as an available caliber, should be easy to fit in an Encore/Contender (another single shot option).

22 Johnson Spitfire is another contender (and Numrich even sells M1 Carbine barrels in the wildcat, too!). It's a 30 Carbine necked down to .224, and bests 5.7 by a little bit, if memory serves.

Not a bolt action, but I know that Contender shooters seem to frequent the cartridge (I'm guessing it having no recoil and a flat trajectory is an attraction for single-shot plinkers)

It's just so teeny that it's really easy to make a high capacity magazine for it, and then it's hard to justify a bolt action operation :D. I imagine T/C makes a Dimension barrel for it, though.

I don't get it, a 22 mag or 223 is cheaper to feed and offer clear advantages, why mess with the 5.7 if not in a handgun?

Because 22mag is rimfire, with all its inherent deficiencies, and 223 is an entire order of magnitude more powerful than necessary, with attendant flash and bluster. A 5.7x28 bolt gun would be even cheaper to reload than 223, and just as easy provided a sonic cleaner is used. No shoulder set-back in a bolt gun ;)
