Got my yearly letter in the mail from the Oneonta sportsman's club I join up by my dad's for the years membership, in the letter it gives some updates on things. They have been building a 500 yard range for the last few years and said they will be doing f class. I didn't know there was 500 yard f class I thought it was 600-1200 ish. Don't know how many matches I'd be able to shoot but maybe I should put a rifle together. What are some of the basic rules, anyone here shoot 500 yard f class?

Yeah normally 600 midrange and 1000 long.
The 500 yard matches probably aren't sanctioned but would be fun to participate in

I have a bud who said he shot in 300 yard F Class matches. Everyone blew out the ten ring, made it hard to score.

If 500 yards is all you have, shoot at 500 yards. I shot BPCR MS a couple of places that didn't have 500 meters, the rams were at 500 yards one place, a bit less than that at the other. I shot F class 300 and 600 one place that didn't have 1000, another that did but used it sparingly because they had to close a road and did not do it every month.

I was there when they quit using the service rifle targets and cut the scoring rings in half because it was getting to where multiple 200 20X was likely.

Sounds like a good time, do they have live pits or e targets ? What course of fire is planned ?

I'm not to sure the range isn't finished yet and I haven't seen that's built so far. I don't think there will be pits or any e targets, it's just a simple sportsman's club that's $50 a year. I've Hurd they will have a range officer on certain days and times, and a sxs to drive down to targets. Don't think there will be any steel to shoot either I was kinda hoping they would since that cold be good hunting practice.

The letter says there will be 5 station covered fixed bench area with 4 for f-class, supposed to be finished this summer but that's what they said the last 2 years.

Mid Range F Class is shot at 300/500/600

Long Range F Class is shot at 800/1000

My range will do a couple of matches early in the year (when the temps are still cool) and shoot the 300/500/600 course of fire. All other prone matches will be 3x600.

I don’t know any rule that would prevent your range from having sanctioned 3x500 yard matches

I'll have to see if I can put a rifle together for this, is it still 22 cal to 35 cal allowed for f class open? I don't really have a rifle at the moment that would be good for f class maybe my 6.5 prc but that's really overkill and would be to pricy, what common for the mid range class. I'd kinda would like to do a 6 arc in a bolt action, how many rounds are shot in a match. Not sure how serious the matches will be with so few lanes and I only get up to my dad's every month or 2 for the range but maybe fun to try out.

A lot left to know. If you haven't got e-targets, target cameras, or old style pits, how do you know what you are doing? I have not seen a spotting scope that will pick bullet holes out of the black at any great range.

Practically any caliber can be made to work at 500 yards, I have a fast twist .223 that did very well out to 600 when I was active. You could save money by shooting F-TR with a .223 or .308.

Ya not sure how the targets will be, I know they have one of the most advanced clay bird courses in the state but I didn't any shotgun stuff there yet. Shame I sold that m40 clone I built that would probably been nice to use, I wonder if they will do any rimfire that would be cheaper for sure.

There are standards the NRA and CMP have for certifying a range. I don’t know them but your club should if having sanctioned matches is important.

Jim’s suggestion is a good one. A Savage with a match barrel throated for 90 VLDs can be very competitive in mid range F/TR. For mid range F Open the 6BR and variations of are also competitive. In windy conditions the 7mm (284 and variations) and 30 cal (300 WSM) have an advantage.
