This bear is truely a trophy Boar. Look at the flattened out skull and blunt nose and the size of the paws.

In Ak you probabley wouldn't even shoot this guy but in the Lower 48 and especially in NM this is about as big and old and as narley as it gets. This bear was over 6 feet long (not squared) and weighed in the neighborhood of 350-400lbs

As you can see from the picture he wasn't very fat he just had a good frame.

One shot from a .30-30 trough the chest settled his hash very nicely.

Not to call you on this, H&H Hunter, because I really enjoy your pictures and postings on this forum and if anybody knows what they're talking about and can back it up it's you, but that lever action in the picture kinda looks like a big bore, maybe a .444 or Model 1895.

Impressive bear.

Whoah! It kinda does, doesn't it?

Perhaps because it's closest to the camera.

You know what guys, I'm busted...........Smacked down in the prime of my life. I'll never be able to do anything with my life but run for public office from now on!!!

I think you guys are right that does look like a BigBore I coulda sworn it was a killed with a .30-30 but by golly I think my memory has possibly failed me.

In any case please accept my apologies and gol durn even if that picture isn't a .30-30 trust me on this one. I've killed and seen killed plenty of bears with a .30-30.

Good spotting guys. Helps to keep us all honest.:D

One of my squad mates hunted black bear in Cali...with a .30-30. I met his family and friends, who all had matching stories.

HH

I am sure you are correct about the 30-30 but I would hate to have one pist off at me after shooting it! I did see a lever action in the photo. My 30-30 Marlin is a level action. Not sure what bore the other rifle is.

I did take the photo and blow it up with my Photoshop 7.0.1 and can't tell for sure what caliber it is. It did seem to have a larger diameter barrel than my 30-30.

Who cares! I see more than one dead bear and that is more than any other person has shown.

I have never shot a bear or even hunted a bear. I would like to one day. HH would you like to be my guide? !!!! I would love to hunt a Bear.

I've got no problem believing you H&H....I've only personally known 3 hunters who've taken black bear with modern rifles. One used a .243, one had an ancient .300 Savage and another used a bubba-ized .30-40 Krag. No magnums or big bores (knew other guys that took them with slugs and big blackpowder rigs, though).

As I said earlier and varminator reiterated, you've the got pictures of well shot bear to back up what you say, so whatever it is you're shooting them with is sure doing some kind of number on them.

Varminator,

When you get ready to hunt bears you drop me a PM and we'll go chase some shaggies in the Rockies.............

Oh and one back to the average size of sport hunted black bear kills....

Depending on the area that one hunts the average size of a black bear is 200-400lbs. the largest ever recoreded to my knowledge (I never say the largest PERIOD because there is always one that I don't seem to know about) was shot not in AK surprisingly but in North Carolina and weighed in at an impressive 880lbs!!!

And yes I'd be a bit hesitant to face off on that bear on the ground with a little bitty ole .30-30.;)

If i ever do get charged by a black bear I wonder what the chances are that it'll be a world record class bear hmmmmm?

It seems that everybody who ever gets close enough to even see a black bear always encounters a 600lber and grizzlies are alway 1200Lb+...That's just amazing to me there sure are alot of record class bears out there stalking innocent hunters and wooly legged tree huggers.:D

(Guys I'm not talking about anyone in particular on this board just in general those are the esitmated bear weights we always seem to hear about.)
