7600 scout mount?

Hellow to all,
I would love a Remington 7600 308P. I want this set up to have the option of a scout scope. I have seen the Amega set ups, but don't like the idea of all those screws. Does it sound possible to just have a Smith drill and tap for a low Picatinny in front of reciever or not. Any information on the subject would be great, and if anyone has any type of scout setup on a 7600/w pics I would love to see.

I have a run-of-the-mill 7600 in 30-06. It was rough when I bought it, and I wanted to make it a scout rifle. I never could find a mount. The idea I had was to make a mount like a cantilever for a shotgun, except reversed, where the mount bolts to the receiver, and extends forward over the barrel. That might work, or it might be too weak to hold zero. I finally just put an Aimpoint on the Weaver base and called it good.

Thanks for jumping in. I believe you are correct as to the strength of that mount. This would not work for me anyway, as I'm sure that you could not use the peep sights over that type of rig.

Thanks for the info. Like I said I'm not into all the screws with Amega system. The other mount is for rear and over the reciever. I'm looking for a rail system for in front of reciever.

Burris makes a scout mount for the Rem 700, 7400, 742 and 7600.

It uses the existing rear sight holes with one more added. Then use the rear scope mount holes for a peep sight. Williams makes a peep that fits.

I set my 7400 up this way and it works fine.

Are you talking about the Remington 7600Police? I have one with 16 1/2 inch barrel. It has ghost ring sights from the factory. I put a red dot on and am good to go for the ranges that present themselves where I live. I have a similar 760 carbine with a Weaver V-3 sight mounted on the receiver. I can't imagine how a scout scope would improve on that.

I can't fault you for that setup, looks like a great scope. If you ever get a chance to use a true Scout set up, you will see why I like it so much. Snap 80-100yd. shots 4-6in. groups from a high ready carry, and ease of carry while tracking (with hand around balance point i.e. reciever). Both eyes open for safer shots on moving targets,IF needed as a follow up on wounded animals.

^^ Yup, these rifles are sleepers. The 7600 Police is an excellent non-tactical rifle, meaning "hard to be hassled over it" rifle in all 50 states. Love mine and am grateful to have learned about them. A true Scout Scope mounting would certainly be nice. I don't have mine handy at the moment to look at it, so am unsure if it has the screw holes that are re-purposed for the Burris mount. Anyone have one handy to see?

I forgot to mention in last post, that i do plan on having BUIS on this rig. Iron sights are a must on any gun in my opinion. It's just that at my skill level irons are a 50 to 60yd. limit, keeping snap shots within the 4-6in. heart lung area.
