Get the real thing baby!

U don't have to pretend -- here is the Browning takedown BLR. Mine would be the Nickel/Stainless/Laminate with that factory Scout Mount. .308 mags are 4+1. Woo hoo!!!

If I did the Mini it would probably have to be a Thirty. Biggest game where I am would be white tail, and it is legal to take them with .223 but I'd feel a lot more comfortable with x39.

I've thought about an SKS too, but it would have to be one of the Chinese commercial versions. They are the only ones light enough. An SKS-M with that nice wood Monte Carlo stock would be damn near perfect w/ some tech sites. Not sure a forward mount would be possible without a new stock though.

Matt,

I thought about that to. I've seen some good Browning lever guns for sale in .308. Just add a peep sight on the back and a quick detachable scope mount where you have it.

I wonder if anyone makes a 10 round mag for it.

For those suggesting an SKS, what would be the best way to accomplish forward mounted optics?

Two options- there is an adapter for the rear sight, or you can replace the gas tube cover with a cover that has a rail on it.

Here's my version of a semi auto "Scout"

The Aimpoint is a MUCH faster sight than an IER scope (which isn't saying much, I find the further the optic is mounted from the eye, the slower it is to use).

With the right bullet selection, there's not much the 5.56 can't do the 7.62x39 can, but if 5.56 isn't isn't enough for you, get the AR in 300 BLK

Very nice rifle Mistwolf. I would love to build a .300 AAC AR, but I don't think I could do that in my price range. Also I have heard horror stories about .300 builds going wrong. As a newbie, I'm just not sure I want to go down that road just yet.

And thanks for the options Bainter, I know Tapco makes a gas tube cover for around $60 that has a rail. I will also look into the rear sight adapter, but would that render the iron sights useless? Guess it wouldn't matter if I throw tech sights on it.

I suppose you could do some scoutin' with this... it is light for a scoped semi .308 (10 lbs.). An M1 weighs that much with just the irons. It does have a quick loop sling, of a type I find superior to the Ching Sling or any of the variations, as it is set up for front side carry and is quick adjustable for overall length. The 1-4x scope is extremely fast on 1x (faster than a scout scope I'd say), and cranks up to 4x in a snap when needed.

I've kind of come to the same conclusion on the intermediate eye relief scopes. They don't seem to be any faster for me and since fitting a "scout" rifle with detachable magazines seems to be the thing to do these days, the only reason to not mount it over the action is for ease of carry. In a semi-auto it makes even less sense because they all use detachable magazines, so unless you're going with a BAR sporting rifle, you're not carrying it at the middle of the action anyhow.
The problem you run into with most semi-autos is that it's hard to get a full-power rifle round in a semi-auto package at scout weight. You can go with the lighter rounds but then you give up Cooper's requirement of being able to drop a medium/large game animal out to 400 yards.
At some point, when I get my feet under me, I think I'll try an AR in 6.5 Grendel. I imagine the round is going to be a barrel burner, but I think it's approaching a better balance of weight and power. Of course, doing this also gives up being chambered in a common round.
Cooper would be so disappointed with me.

I have no dog in this fight but noticed this "scout" thread. Thought you might be interested in an advertisement from the mid 1960s American Rifleman magazine.

Everything old is new again.
