Today I found an 870 in a local pawnshop, its in pretty rough shape and looks like it's been exposed to high heat. The bluings gone and the varnish in the stock is bubbled out. It does appear functional......just ugly.

How much would ya'll pay for a fixer upper like I've described?

It really depends, and it's hard to say without actually seeing it. What gauge is it? Fixed choke, and what choke? Vent rib or plain? Barrel length? Is the finish just bubbled or are there any deep scratches in the wood?

It's a 12 ga set up for defense with 18.5" plain barrel and a mag extention. I didn't notice any scratches in the wood. There were a lot of wildfires here a couple years ago and i'm thinking it was in a fireproof safe maybe?

I can probably get it for around $150, it'll be a truck gun. I think i'm trying to talk myself into it:)

Sandpaper and steel wool should get it presentable appearancewise.

High heat?

Like a house fire surviver?

I would not buy it, as you have no way of knowing if the heat treatment of the metal parts have been compromised.

I'd be careful, but it might be OK.

On the one hand, I agree that the temperatures required to change the heat treatment of metal are pretty high, high enough that I'd expect to at least see charring where the metal meets the wood. On the other hand, you can lose the temper of springs pretty quickly, and plastic parts can deform.

Don't the newer 870s have a plastic trigger guard? If that softened a bit it might have changed the alignment of some of the important bits.

Give it a careful evaluation. They are tough guns but you are only saving a hundred bucks here, if you have to replace the trigger group you'd be better off with a different gun.

Ditto. If it was in any kind of fire I don't want it. Many guns are in fire proof safes, they don't burn but the heat in there still can damage them serverly. To many used shotguns out there to risk a fire damaged one.
