was thinking about buying a 92x performance.....I see there are 2 different variants....one has a rail & is heavier than the other....not too crazy about the safety on the frame....any opinions on which one would be better? thanks

The first question you'd need to answer is, "Better for what?"
Besides one having a rail, the other one is cut to mount a red dot sight

...one has a rail & is heavier than the other
5 ounces is quite a bit in a competition gun. The Performance Defensive is specifically designed for competition in IDPA with a lightened slide and frame to meet weight limitations

....not too crazy about the safety on the frame
I have to say I've never heard this complaint before when referring to the Beretta 92 platform. I'm pretty sure this configuration was offered at the request of competitors

They are both designed as competition guns. If you compete in gun games, if one fits the rules of the games you compete in, they are probably excellent choices.

As a carry, home defense, or casual plinking gun, you'd probably be better served by different models within the Beretta M9/92 line-up.

I got the railed/heavier one before they announce the lighter/non-rail/optic one was coming out. Wish I had waited as the dot would be a nice option as well as a bit lighter. Plus, I don't need/want the rail on a pistol like that.

Is an excellent pistol in any form though!

not in competition or anything like that....probably would be a bit over kill for plinking.....lol.....just curious if anyone bought either just for plinking.....

They have steel frames, which would be heavier than the aluminum frames of the rest of the M9/92 line-up, and that frame mounted safety lever won't have a decocker, so if you want to shoot from double action, you'll need to pull the trigger and manually lower the hammer.

I know competition guys do that all the time with their CZ's, Tanfoglio's, and now their Beretta Performance series guns, but as a 1911 guy, Condition 2, is a place where I never go with my guns. I'm just not a fan of manual lowering the hammer on a live round. On a DA/SA gun, I like having a decocker.

They are also near the top of price line within the Beretta line-up.

I have the performance model and am not overly crazy about it.

IMO they used the wrong slide, should have used a lighter weight slide vs the heavy brigadier slide. You can feel that heavy slide moving.

The checking is a joke. With the nissen finish the pistol is very slick, but the way the checking is cut makes no difference. Hold a CZ shadow 2 to see and feel how to do proper checking.

The safety lever extended up past the slide, so if you grip the slide low enough you will jam your fingers on those levers.

Came with 2 15 round mags, shadow 2 comes with 3 19 mags. Why it doesn't come with 18 rd mags is beyond me.

Doesn't come with the match mag release or match hammer. Why is a 1400 dollar gun designed for games not have the match related parts already installed?

The grips are a complete joke, Beretta should be ashamed. Mine wears Lok grips but they are only a marginal improvement. Every person that has one and posted their thoughts says the same thing, grips sucks.

IMo, the defense model, they took weight out of the wrong spots.
Beretta's solution to add optics is laughable. They mount the optic extremely high.
If you want a RDO Beretta I would go with LTT.

Lastly, IMO the shadow 2 is a far superior pistol than the performance model.

I just recently traded off a 92x performance. It was an absolutely fantastic gun (railed version). I had close to 3000 rounds through it and loved the safety. I wish beretta would have put it there 20 years ago. My only complaint was the rear sight.

Glad to see I'm not the only person on the planet who prefers the classic Beretta slide mounted safety/decocker. This is the ONLY reason I don't yet own a 92x performance.
