A very good idea. I joined a private outdoor range a while back, and am thoroughly enjoying it. You'd need a team of wild horses to drag me back to a public range.
Actually the swat fella didn't bother me as much as the guys assaulting my target frame. I should add it's MY target frame, not some shot-up range frame. If some people can't understand why I would be upset that someone was shooting in a way that endangered my personal property and continued to do so after they saw it was happening, well I won't be able to explain it to you any better. Yahoo is the most polite term I have for that kind of person.
And as someone on another board pointed out to me, I've been complaining about the spotting scope since I bought it, so I may have done that on purpose, kinda subconsciously.
I've seen all kinds of strange things at this range, the worst was when I heard the 2 youths setting up at the bench start talking about how someone could shoot someone out here and just take their guns. I beat a quick retreat that day. Was talking to a guy not long ago who was walking down to change out targets while another fella was packing up to leave. When he got back to his bench the fella was gone, and so was his M1 carbine.
Most days it's not a bad place to shoot, but I try to stay pretty aware of what's going on around me.
