A "Quieter" Way of Shooting?

Some CCI Long CB .22 ammo would be a lot quieter. Out of a long-barreled .22, it's quieter than an air rifle. It isn't very powerful, but it should be treated the same as any .22 ammo, as far as safety rules. I've found it to be an accurate, quiet way to punch paper at the range, especially at the end of the day when people are hanging around, chatting, before heading home. I also like it for introducing new shooters to the sport.

Sniper4Life,

Seriously, pay attention to Old Fuff and others in regard to the quality Air Guns.

WE all understand wanting to shoot a "real gun" with "real ammo", we really do.
Just at this point in life - Mom's house, Mom's rules.

That is just the way it is, and someday it will be Sniper4Life's house and your rules and you will slap your head, yell out in angst :
"Oh NO! I sound like Mom and other adults now!"
Called life. It is okay. :D

These RWS, and other Quality Air guns, are really that good!
Old Fuff and others nailed it with price of ammunition allowing for more quality practice.

I assist new folks with shotguns for instance.
Dead Serious here.
I share correct basics, starting with gun fit, correct stance, mounting gun to face and everything.

At home, in garages, spare bedrooms, out back on the property, in barns...

NO Ammo.
Gun TRiple checked.
4 Rules of Safety.

Folks from young girls and boys , teenage boys and girls, to ladies and gents, doing Repetitions of correctly mounting gun to face every day if can, still most days of the week.

Instilling all the correct basics over and over again, and never fire a live round.
It depends on the person, Kids I only start out at 5 every day. Adults at 25 a day.
And they work up for instance the adults doing 100 a day.

Serious shotgunners will do these Repetitions, at least 100 times a day, many will do 2, 3, 4 and I was doing 500 a day sometimes when I was getting ready for some serious shotgunning.

No ammo, just quality repetition of correct basics.
It also builds staimina.

Take a teenager, male or female, that is doing 50 repetitions a day, has not fired a shotgun in a week, and I assure you, that person can shoot a shotgun better than someone using live ammo and just "blasting" with a gun that does not fit, using in correct form and all.

Not just shotguns
Name any shooting discipline and the better shooters do a LOT of dryfire practice.

A good quality spring powered air rifle (650-800fps) with match pellets is very quiet. Pump up or pre-charged rifles emit a sharp crack that carries further then 22lr.

Subsonic 22lr out of a rifle can be pretty quiet also but I found quite of bit of noise difference between the various brands. IIRC one of the Remingtons was quietest (22 short, 22 long, 22lr) buy a box of each and try them. You need to get a 22lr bolt or lever gun. IME none of the subsonic rounds will reliably cycle a semi auto.

If you go for the air gun I would suggest Gamo brand and look for one of the lower velocity ones. Target grade air rifles and pistols are usually around 550-700fps with match pellets and quiet. A good one is also quite a bit more accurate than most 22s. My match air pistol will shoot 0.060 C-C 10 shot groups virtually every time at 10 meters.

Ok, I hear you on the air guns. What about airsoft, got to shoot one a while back and it seemed pretty quiet.

Remember a big factor is cost, I am saving for college and a crotchrocket both, so I really dont have alot to spend on this.

Thanks for all the ideas so far!

Since someone asked...

Since someone asked: Shorts are not necessarily CBs (or CBees). CBs are ultra-low velocity 22s. I know CCI and Remington make them in shorts; I have heard that they made them in longs once upon a time. They aren't much louder than a loud capgun (I've had some really snappy cap guns over the years, as I recall). Effective range: 15, 20 yards.

Sadly, Sniper, you're right - they are so low power that they won't cycle most semi-autos. They wouldn't cycle my dad's Remington Nylon 66. You would probably have to shoot them single-shot.

Better than nothing??? Yeah, I remember those days. What am I saying? I exchanged my mom for my wife!!! :D)

Good luck & best wishes,
Quoheleth

Nearly Silent 22 ammo...

Look up Aguila (sp?) Colibri ammo. No actual gunpowder in the case just alot of priming compound. Will only be good to maybe 20 yards but sounds like a pellet gun and allows you to practice the functions of shooting.

Same problem. Quiet but very short length. Probably will not cycle the gun but will also jam it. JMHO

More of a question than a suggestion but would a suppressor for an air rifle be illegal? I have a winchester air rifle chambered in .177 and it is pretty loud (1000 fps BTW). It isn't so loud that i use hearing protection but is loud enough to attract unwanted attention at times. Now if one was to build a suppressor for a .177 pellet would that still be illegal under federal law?

Get rid of mom

Kidding, Kidding :p

The biggest issue is the semi 22. I have been using an old bolt action around the farm and ammo makes all the difference. subsonic is very quiet, others are almost loud enough for hearing protection.

Is there a way to have the bolt not cycle when shooting and just load rounds in one at a time?

Suppressors for air guns have been ruled illegal in at least one case I know of. Beeman tried to import a suppressor for one of their precharged rifles when they first started to sell them. ATF said no.
