Guys, was at a friend's range this past weekend, where some folks were shooting at some steel targets.

Yup. Ricochet, bounce back, and about 1/3 of a .223 is stuck in the fellow's forearm. REALLY stuck. As in, ER, and "Sorry, but we're not going to remove the shrapnel."

Wear your safety glasses...
 
Why wouldn't the ER remove it?
If the shrapnel is in tendons, nerves or other slow-healing or sensative tissue the damage done removing it can be worse than letting it be. They do have to take a knife to flesh and your body has to recover from those wounds as well.
