The good ole 30-30 works so well because of the wonderful bullets that are constructed to function at the
30-30 velocities..I have killed sooo many Whitetails at different distances, with different weights of bullets .. most with 170gr bullets ..from 125yds and closer .. But I have killed a few futher ..but I never recovered a bullet ..all through and through....308 hole in , bigger going out ...
I don't know what velocity the bullet was travlin.... what energy level it was reaching.. all I know the deer was taken cleanly ,,, that is if I done my part ..
I think thats why the 6.5x55 has such a reputation .. 140gr - 160gr bullet moving at moderate velocity... and penetrating deep ...

Over the years I have owned several 270win rifles ... I had a Winchester model 70 for over 25yrs with a old Redfield 3X9-30 mounted on it , gave it and a older Savage 110 in 270 win.
to my nephews .. And I picked up a Remington M783 at Academy last year .. just to fool with ... Gosh , it's accurate and has a great trigger and it likes 150gr bullets , which I like ...
