This is to show what can be done with muzzleloading pistols. Both these
targets were shot at 25 yds and are 10 shots. Both were shot by top shooters at the top of their game. I don't know if I should name names so
I won't, but you could "Google" it. The 45 Auto was shot by a feller who won
the Nationals at Camp Perry 10 times. He was on "Top Shot" last summer.
The muzzleloading target I witnessed and was shot by a friend of mine. Both
targets were shot in competition. This is not to put anything or anybody down, it's just to show Muzzleloaders can hold their own against the best.

This is the type of Muzzleloading Pistol were talking about. And of course
the 45 Auto is tuned to give 1 1/2 groups at 50 yds.

(Probably thanks to bad TV) When I was young, I had the idea that:

1) Muzzle-loaders were smooth-bores and...
2) You couldn't hit a barn from the inside.
3) Flintlocks took 30 seconds from click to fsssss! to BOOM!

I was glad to learn these sorts of things are just myths. ;)

Nice shootin. I am usually sitting at the rifle range and can attest to sub moa/ moa accuracy even with a lead ball and no scope

I remember the first time I shot my flintlock. I was brand new to muzzleloading although I had been shooting almost 40 years.

The first five shot group was tighter than a Polish Mosin Nagant carbine that I was attemping to get to group half decent and I had spent many hours bedding and tweaking the virtualy unfired Polish carbine.

I was instantly sold on muzzleloaders then. Now that is all I hunt with.

Note: about those two targets. There is one difference that is substantial; more about the conditions of shooting than the accuracy of the gun. The .45 ACP target is a sustained fire target. Those ten shots were fired in two strings of five shots, not more than twenty seconds per string, depending on whether the stage was "Timed" (20 secs) or "Rapid" (10 secs.).
This is not to take away anything from the truly magnificent ML target which by its nature was shot slow fire.
Where does one get one of those MLers as pictured? Or one like them?

How would you know that Pete? Were you there? I was.
There are several guys that make these kind of pistols. There is always
several like these for sale at Friendship each year. Note, We do have
timed fire in muzzleloading. It's 5 shots in 5 min. Then wait a few minuites
then another 5 in 5 min. That's different than just standing in one spot
and shooting your 10 shots, not to take anything away from the wonderful
45 Auto target.

I've gotten similiar groups with my ROA at 7yds with a 2 hand hold although I occasionally get a flyer, but any b/p pistol is capable of repeatable, accurate, results if loading and seating are consistant, and proper cleaning is done after shooting.

KW: I hope that you did not take offense. No offense was intended. The point of my supposed clarification was to give a better sense of Zinn's skills.
I was not "there". But the .45ACP target is an NRA B-8 target. That is a 25 yard sustained fire target used for timed and rapid stages. Your reference to the 10 time champion means Gunny Zins. He makes a habit of shooting clean targets like that one. The deduction then is that the target was shot during one of his matches.
I am unsure about the "Were you there? I was" comment or how that changes my deduction.
Do you mean that you saw Zins shoot that target and that it was not shot as sustained fire? In any case, it does not detract one iota from that magnificent ML target.
The five shots in five minutes timed for MLers is the same rate of fire as the Bullseye precision stage. 10 shots in ten minutes. I did not know that.

There used to be a lot of those MLs out there. Originally made from a Crosman pellet gun with a Douglas or other barrel grafte on (breechplug with centered nipple). 10 Ring Precision, I believe, also made quite a few out of 1911 "lowers" and a ML barrel mounted on top. Both shoot quite well. TC made a single shot Patriot 45 ML pistol for a while but didn't get much press until we persuaded them to bring it out with a 1 in 22" barrel. The first one was 1 in 48 and wouldn't group well. Still got one of the slow twist boys and wish I could find a new stock and 1 in 20 barrel.

These are some of ours

Whoops left out the 1911 Muzzleloader

And this fine piece that belongs and is shot by a little old lady. Her husband made it for her.

That little old lady's pistol reminds me of a TOZ free pistol. What is the trigger weight? That is a trigger set lever protruding from the bottom of the grip, yes?
How does the trigger compare to the other guns shown?

What is your opinion, if any, regarding Pedersoli's Carleton Underhammer pistol?

I have an underhammer .50 with a 12" barrel from Bob Worthington/Greyhaven Arms. It is a nice shooter but I can only aspire to some of the marksmanship shown by the targets in this thread.

Wife had a Carleton she won at a shoot. It was good and very accurate.
It was way too heavy for either of us to hold out and shoot. Sold it. A pistol
should balance at the trigger. The Carleton was way barrel heavy.
