Active Shooter Drills May Not Stop A School Shooting — But This Method Could

One of the issue brought up against performing active shooter drills is that it traumatizes some children. They specifically call out a child who is ASD and ADHD being traumatized. As a parent with a child in the same category as that one I know that even fire drills sets my child off. The solution is to inform the parents and make accommodation for children who might be adversely affected by the drill. We provide our child with ear muffs and the teacher informs the child prior to the drill. Those accommodations prepare the child for the drill and hopefully would help normalize the actions taken during a real event. If it can be done for fire drills I don't see why it couldn't be done for active shooter drills.

Interestingly my mother teaches at a university which had a campus lockdown event (which turned out to be unnecessary) last year where there were professors who had the students do the most inane things in response. There were was even one professor who told the students to wait where they were while he left the room and further the campus. Other professors told the students to hide under desks. Very few even thought to barricade doors (which many do not even have locks on them even now). In the end it was a massive cluster of incompetence. The students at the university were very upset about the lack of coordinated or effective response to the event. In the time since the lockdown my mother has been researching how to make as effective of a response possible within the limitations surrounding her, but the university itself mostly wants to bury its collective head in the sand.
