History
I can't remember exactly when I first met Jason Adams. I know it was in the 2005-2007 time frame. It was at the Manatee Gun Archery club down in Myakka City, Florida. Jason was testing out piston coversions and we struck up a conversation. At the time, I was doing lots of video work on the topic of firearms for (the infantile) YouTube. I think there were 3 or 4 gun-related channels at the time. Jason and I had talked about collaborating on some video marketing for his piston conversion kits, but the timing wasn't right. My career took a turn and I started working as a traveling camera man in the Real Estate, and ultimately the Manufacturing sector.
It wasn't long before Adams Arms blew up in the world. They were all over the place by the time SHOT Show 2007 came around. I remember seeing his conversions featured on rifles in several manufacturer's booths. At the same time, all the rage of premium piston ARs was blossoming, with H&K, LMT, LWRC, Barrett and others acting as the pollen.
The great debates came soon after, which as you've mentioned, we need not delve into. Debates of a different sort were about to enter, ones of the matters of intellectual property.
I know that Adams Arms was pursuing legal action against SIG regarding the gas block/regulator and piston design. LWRC was also going after SIG for what appeared to be a blatant ripoff of the bolt carrier design. It was some time before all the dust settled.
By the time the air was clear again, some were standing, some were lying down, and some had fled amongst the scuffle. I saw Jason Adams again at the Wyoming Antelope Club in Clearwater, Florida and learned that he had sold his stake in the company and moved on, yet the company still bears his name. He was doing some tack driving with what appeared to be traditional gas-driven ARs. The guy is an asset to the firearms community; I wonder what he's doing now. For everyone's benefit, hopefully it's firearms related!
I know this is not the info you're looking for, but it's info nonetheless....
