Setting up the machining to make SKSs in the US would not be very practical, especially when the market is already flooded with the various imports.
This modded rifle is interesting. Nice job.

You're right. I don't think a lot of people understand the costs and time involved in such a venture. You would have to have a pretty damn good idea that your idea would fly to be remotely feasible.

Also

I'm surprised there are not US-made SKSs being made. the SKS design seems incredibly simple compared to an AK or an AR, and I would think could be fairly easily made compared to an AK or AR.

They are not simple!

It's not simple especially from the manufacturing stand point. Too much machining and hand fitting. It was designed in the 40s/50s when the Soviets had unlimited cheap labor (later made by the Chinese).

Injection molding
Casting
CNC
etc.
are where it's at.

They are not simple compared to an AR.

So firstly, the left sided bolt handle is AWESOME. The whining about it's non crufflerdom is inevitable. The shortend barrel would likely make the balance wonderful.

My one question is about the bolt stop. Earlier you mentioned that any magazine that can activate the bolt stop would lock the bolt on the last shot. Seriously, are there any such critters in detachable form? The singular reason that I bought an SKS over an AK is that I simply can't stand semiautos that don't lock the bolt open on the last shot. I was willing to forgo the detachable magazines for that feature but if your company could make that possible I'd be very interested!

As Full Clip says, Tapco makes them and so far, they have been 100% reliable in the 3 guns that we tried them in. We will have a more definitive answer by 7 March when we get back from Front Sight. We'll use probably 6 or 8 mags and put nearly 2000 rounds through them.

I think this thing is pretty neat. I don't own an SKS, more of an AR guy, but this looks like something I would be more likely to buy.

What about rechambering the SKS to 5.45x39?

I know this has been rejected as too difficult, but would there be a market for an SKS in 5.45 or 5.56 ? There seems to be no shortage of rifles in those calibers. But maybe I just think so because I don't like them.

Great idea and neat execution. .30 caliber and affordable ammo. I like it.
+1 on the AK-type side mount suggestion. It it's going to cost $600, what's an extra $200 for a Kobra sight. :D

But if you move the bolt handle to the left side, you still can't hit yourself in the face with it. So it's not as "modern" as an AR.

:D

I might have missed it in the thread, so apologies if so. Is that a US made bolt carrier, or a reworked import? If US made, that's a plus for those playing the 10-or-less game.

I have one of the 'paratrooper' type SKSs with the factory/importer shortened barrel. I can see that having a left-hand bolt handle would be very handy.

- Fire until empty.
- Tilt rifle to left, insert stripper clip.
- Grasp top round with left thumb + forefinger under bullet, charge magazine, toss clip.
- Tilt rifle back to shooting angle, pull bolt handle with left hand.

Your right hand never has to leave the grip, and you don't have to raise your head above cover. If you sell the bolt carriers separately and they are a US part, I'd be intersested. It's not like it's a permanent modification, either. The bolt carrier is easy to swap out.

Kudos. :)

Having had a couple of TechSights now, I think I would like Ultimak to make a gas tube rail like they have for a few other rifles.

Do you work on the triggers at all? I have an SKS with possibly the worlds worst trigger pull. Can I send my SKS in and have the work done? I'm a lefty and like the charging handle right where it is but new sights, a nice trigger and maybe refinishing and a new stock would make me happy. I'm planning on dropping in to your shop on the way to Michigan anyway so I might as well check one of these out.

What do you think of that Tapco stock? I've seen some mixed reviews on it. I'm wondering if it would be better to go with a Choate or higher quality synthetic.

Don

p.s. the work you did on my G27 is making a couple of friends think about buying Glocks to get modified.

Hi Don, glad you're happy with your 27! I hope you're able to stop by.

Yes, we do SKS triggers and yes, you can send it in to us. We use the Tapco T-6 stocks and like them pretty well, They are sturdier than the folders and the drop on them is just right...at least for us. My favorite stock for the SKS is the Choate Dragunov stock.

Cool

I will be passing through there at some point in April. When it gets a little closer to that time I'll email you and give you a list of what I'd like done. My travel plans are a little vague, I check out of my unit on the 3rd of April and HAVE to be in Michigan on the 10th to take an advancement exam. Other than that my only plans are to see a friend in Seattle and visit the Grand Canyon. Maybe I can drop the rifle off on my way through?

Don

600 later bucks you still have an sks
150 for unissued yugo
the money you save by buying a stock yugo sks allows you to buy three more

my polite argument that will make you money

how much would it cost if you made it ca legal?

of course, something would have to go (detachable magazine or pistol grip stock).

CA legal?
Hmmm, it's no longer a C&R with the mods (bolt, carrier, shorter barrel), so you have to beat 922r, meaning you need everything you see (including a US-made op rod and gas piston) minus the CA-illegal detachable 20-rounder, plus a US-made non-detachable 10-rounder (that works). Sadly, that last part of the puzzle is sorely lacking in the current marketplace... Oh and that muzzle device must be US-made as well... Easy, eh? :barf:

Desertscout I like it. The shortened bbl. has got to make it handle far better than stock length. The bolt mod for quick mag changes is also a great idea. Personally I'd leave the bolt handle where it is, but I'm glad you guys offer the option for those who want it. Keeping the wood stock that comes on it or putting a synthetic monte carlo stock on there would retain a more PC look. It would also make a handy rifle for medium game in thick undergrowth with the shortened bbl and a standard mag - Deer & Hogs in the swampy & marshy areas of the Ga & Carolina lowlands come to mind for me.

It wouldn't be hard at all to make it CA legal. Replace the T-6 stock with the ATI Monte Carlo stock and leave the factory 10 rounder in it. I suppose you'd have to cut the bayonet lug too. The muzzle brake/flash suppressor is American made.

I shoot from the right shoulder, and having listened to the rifle-team coach a great many years ago, keep the left eye open when sighting with the right eye.

I'm not sure I want to see an op-handle flinging back and forth inches from my left eye.

Original design is just fine for me. Yes, I do have to dismount it from the shoulder to work the handle, but it is not realistic that my right hand alone can keep it up to my shoulder. Unless we are talking about firing from a rest, and I'm not thinking the idea was to build a better bench rest rifle.

Looks like a noble effort and I think you've done a good job so far. I would keep making a few subtle changes over time to make it look less Tapco SKS'ish. The shortened barrel is great, but is there anything you can do to get rid of that now pointless bayonet lug? Another thing that would look neat is if you modified the bolt handle to look more like an Ak, instead of the round knob? I figure if you can reverse what side its on then you can also re-design its look to. Just a thought, but then again I'm no gunsmith:D

To tack onto what nwilliams posted, I'd be very interested in buying a new bolt that had a stud on both sides. What'd be extremely cool (maybe just to me) would be a simple flat metal affair like those put on competition Remington semiauto shotguns. Either way I'd love some information on how I'd get in touch with you folks to talk turkey about this stuff!

Hey, if you sell just the bolt for an AK and a modified dust cover I will be on that like stink on poop.
