I have a Springfield Armory SOCOMM M1A. I would like to put a CQB scope on it aand am looking for some pointers. The rail is in front of the action/port on the breech end of the barrel so it needs to be a long eye relief.

Any help is appreciated.

Check the actual distance from the rail/scope mounting position to where your eye will be with a good cheek weld.

You may need an "intermediate eye relief" scope instead a a "long eye relief" which is typically a handgun scope.

If you want a "CQB scope" like a 1x RDS, the aimpoint M68 is top of the line. Or get a pistol scope of you want magnification. Usually 4x or less, I think.

I use an Ultimak rail and a Nikon Force XR 2.5-8x28 scope.

I've used this setup for several years and it's pretty easy to work with.

Ncstar makes a cheap one for like 50 bucks that might go?s up for a while. Pistolero or something? Lot of guys run them on their mosins. Next up is the leatherwood 2_7 scout scope for a bit over 100. After that's weaver makes a scout scope, as does Burris. Leupold makes a scope that competes with the Burris, but from what I can tell, it is is less good in every way and costs more.

The factory rail is not reliable, it's a poorly designed system that doesn't have a point of reference when it's installed. Quite often it will cause the optic to cause your impacts to be too high, sometimes too low, it just depends on how far toward the receiver the rail is clamped. There are only a few rails that will work properly, most either don't fit well or wont properly align the optics to the bore. M14ca and Ultimak are my favorites, I have the Ultimak but if I had to do things over again I'd probably buy the M14ca Scout Handguard.

As for the optics themselves, I've tried several;

Nikon Force XR
EOTech XPS2
Aimpoint Micro T1
Leupold Scout
Vortex Red Dot
Bushnell TRS-25

The best red dot was the Aimpoint Micro (T1 or H1) but the Bushnell is an inexpensive compromise. The EOTech is good if you need a tactical optic but I think it's just too much for the average shooter - too big, too expensive (plus EOTech admitted that there is a parallax issue when the temperatures change). The Leupold was nice but I went with the Nikon because the rifle is accurate enough that the extra magnification was usable, I've can keep my hits down to 2 MOA out to 400 yards.
