I have decided that when I get my tax return, I am going to go ahead and get a gun and the concealed carry permit (I live in Florida, Miami area). I would like to find a place where I can try out several models of guns to see which fits me best (yes I have shot before, but only a .38 revolver). Does anyone know of a reputable range/school in the Miami area? Any recommendations of guns to start with would also be appreciated.

Thanks.

Where in Miami?

There is American Gun Range right off of I95 and Pembroke Road and Big Al's off 95 and Hallendale. Those are both ranges but I dont know the selection.

http://www.panteraguns.com/ These guys are in Miami too, but Ive never been there nor do I know if they rent guns (and Im pretty sure they arn't a range) but they may know of someone good.

Aces and Florida Gun Center. Both have good ranges, rental guns and instruction available. Both are in the phone book, FGC has the nicest range. Call before you go to arrange any instruction you may need. Both have instructors to help with CCW requirements.
The gun you start with may not be the one you end up with. I think it's a very good idea to start with a .22 to build the basic skills. Once you are up to speed, then look at a Ruger SP 101, Glock 19 or 26, or SIG 239. Do some reading and ask for opinions here. Be prepared to spend some time and money to gain enough skill to feel comfortable and competent.

Or check out my signature line for another site. We offer IDPA and other types of shooting if you ever get bored with the static range stuff.

I shoot at Big Al's when I am in SoFla. Indoor range, air conditioned. I took the CWP class there. I am pretty sure they have guns for rent. I sure hope so as I plan to try a few before I buy a competition handgun.

John's (Big Al) daughter is there doing the bookwork. John teaches the part of the class that is not on videotape.
