Advice on Mauser K98k Surplus Rifles

My favorite manufacturers are Oberndorf : Factory code 42 or BYF
or BRNO: DOT, DOU

The RC rifles are easy to spot a mile away- they have a reddish color shellac finish (probably the same stuff put on mosins) and they don't have cleaning rods, sight hoods, or guard screws. The russians needed steel, so they recycled these 'extraneous' parts.

Absolutely nothing wrong with RC K98s- they are an interesting piece of history in of themselves, probably a very good chance it was used in Operation Barbarosa.

Well as hard as it may be to believe, here is what I heard about the removal of these parts from the Russian capture k98s. The disarmament talks between the USA and the Soviet Union actually expanded to even include the huge stockpile of German equipment and weapons that the Russians captured in WW2 even though most of it was already obsolete by the time of the talks. As a part of the negotiations the Russians agreed to disable these rifles. (Yeah I know this is stupid because by then the Ruskies were all carrying AK47s) But despite the fact that these rifles were pretty useless in the grand sceme of things the Russians even cheated on this ridiculous request by simply removing the cleaning rods, sight hood and capture screws and calling that disabling the rifle. Of course the rifles still function perfectly without any of these parts.

If the Russians had simply been desparate for steel as you say then there is a helluva lot more steel in the recievers and barrels than these minor parts.

This is awesome. Russians FTW.

I'm just looking for a shooter. So all I have to request from the buyer is:

Manufactured 1937-1943ish
Excellent to Very Good Bore
Arsenal: Orbendorf?
Decent stock?

If conversion is the goal, why not just buy a Stevens.

Because it's just not the same as shooting a rifle, completely converted by one's self, with the pride and care only you can provide.
Old World machined Mausers harken back to the days when workmanship was an art and not just a button on a programed CNC machine.
