Imported oil from the ME is 25% with 15% coming from the Saudi's. For a 10% stake in the game who cares what any part of the middle east thinks of US gun ownership.

True in spirit, but we no longer live in an isolated village separated by unnavigable oceans, without global bodies of governance and banking that have real effect on said citizens.

Some would argue that the American .gov agency would be crazy to not check Al-Jazeera out itself. I'd imagine that someone gets paid to do exactly that.

If you want to be educated about the world, sometimes it's good to hear the opinion of people who probably don't agree with you - that's why I check out Al-Jazeera occasionally. But in this case, some of the screwy sources of statistics notwithstanding, I think they took a fairly unbiased crack at just telling the facts. I've definitely seen worse from American news agencies.

It's a quite nice article on gun ownership around the world, and especially in the United States, stating mostly facts.

Should all US media write articles like this, we'd have no problems.

I watched their coverage of the Egypt uprising, and I was amazed at the quality, especially considering how I had always heard of them in a bad light in the past.

The point that we should be comparing homicides instead of shootings is particularly valid. Is the US more violent than other developed countries? Do we have higher rates regardless of cause?

We have a higher firearm suicide rate than Japan, BUT our overall rate is lower. Are those shootings relevant or are the causes that move people to kill themselves the real important information?

It is critical that we understand whether the answers are to the right question before becoming too entranced by them.
