What struck me about this is that it is written by a legal Chinese immigrant to the US living in Chicago. He is espousing to an international community the virtues of our RKBA and the fallacies of gun controlled and disarmed culture he came from. this is a very interesting perspective since he came to these conclusions since being able the experience the US- Chicago no less. You are probably wondering why this is posted in activism. well, there are ZERO comments on the Al Jazeera article. Read on and if anything share the insights he reveals.

Sometime it takes an immigrant to really appreciate the freedoms we enjoy in the USA.

As for Al Jazeera, like all news outlets, they have their bias. That said, a US soldier who spent a year in Iraq told be that Al Jazeera covered the both good and the bad, for many of the good events, they were usually the only news media present. e.g., at the opening of a school of faculty built by US forces. Sort of like how the mainstream news used to work before 24 hour news services started.

Al Jazeera did surprise me with the completeness of their reports, back when I had a dish and box.

I do not like the sentiment of "Unless you can take away all the guns from criminals, I will not give up my guns."
I own guns for several of the "lawful, traditional purposes" protected by the state constitution, laws and court rulings: self-defense which includes defense of innocent others, military preparedness training, hunting, recreational shooting, protection against predatory animals, collection as curio or keepsake. The worst murderer in my hometown killed three people. one woman with knife in 2004, a young couple with baseball bat in 2006. I will be 69 in a few days (years old) and I want protection against murderous criminals period, not just criminals with guns, and if dangerous criminals disappeared all together, I would still want my guns for hunting, recreational shooting, and historical collection.

In this Bizzaro World we now inhabit ALJ is one of the best most credible news sources extant. They're not perfect but they've been doing some good work for years. Great article!

I work at a large indoor range/gun shop in a major metropolitan area. We have allowed many news outlets on to our property to film news stories, but almost all of them ended up doing their best to make us (and gun owners in general) look as bad as possible. Al Jazeera America was one of the few news outlets that was fair and even-handed in reporting on the gun issue in our facility. Al Jazeera America was the only news outlet that we established a cordial relationship with. It's too bad they went under.

but what were they reporting in non english speaking nations? eastbank.

"but what were they reporting in non english speaking nations? eastbank.

i'm literate in Arabic. Al Jazeera reports the same thing in Arabic it does in English. Al Jazeera is not politicalized like US news organizations. Sure did hate to see Al Jazeera go away.

I've been surprised at their objectivity as well.

I'll post a comment to the story if it will help.

AJ proved to be MUCH more credible than CNN when I was in Afghanistan.

AJ contacted one of our units to ask about a questionable story, the unit debunked it and AJ didn't run the Taliban propaganda pieces. About 24 hours later CNN did run their propaganda though. We started tracking it after that and AJ was consistently more fair and unbiased than CNN

I would trust AJ over CNN any day of the week.

In the Gulf States, what the Emir wants is what the Emir gets.

And in the case of his news organization, what the Emir very publicly said he wanted was unbiased reporting of interest to the people of Qatar and it neighbors. Of course, everyone at Al Jazera knows it would not be a good idea to file an negative report on the Emir or his family, but beyond that and the prejudices that come from being a tiny oil-rich nation in one of the most volatile areas of the world, the Emir has largely gotten what he asked for.

Yes Al Jazeera has consistently surprised me with being a better news agency than you will find on the US networks.

I am slow to get behind brand names as they often get sold in the US and what you once loved and trusted turns to garbage, but Al Jazeera has been consistently doing a good job for at least the 15 or so years I have paid attention to them.

A foreign Arabic name is probably the only reason they don't get the credibility they deserve in the US.

This is just speculation and drawing conclusions, but maybe some Al Jazeera's major middle eastern funders have realized that now that their chances of finding business opportunities in the US through donations to a former presidential candidate's foundation have been flushed down the toilet, plan B is to make peace with actual american taxpayers. AJ has its quirks sometimes but compared to virtually all western mainstream media it's on a whole another level in objectivity and journalism.

If this was a new strategy of journalism to them I'd maybe agree. But this is consistent with how they've been doing news for a decade.

In relative terms, yes. In absolute terms this article is pretty close to a new record as far as the combination of the subject and approach is concerned.

Exactly. They've been this way from the beginning.

As hdwhit has pointed out, the Emir of Qatar wanted an objective news agency and pays to have one.
