Statistics showing that "more guns means more gun deaths" are plumb ridiculous. Rather like this one: which country has the absolute lowest per capita highway deaths? The Marshall Islands. Why? No cars! So what?

Countries with lower "gun-related homicide" include Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Turkmenistan... Are they safer places to live?

In my blog at gunliberal.treffle.com you can find some useful graphics and figures like these:

  • Despite its citizens having way more firearms than any other country, the US has about an average murder rate. (#108 worldwide, or #7 in the G20)
  • Ranking the states in the US by homicide rate, and comparing this to the Brady ranking for tough gun laws, shows no correlation at all between the two.
  • Do more guns mean more killing? The US is #20 worldwide in the lowest number of homicides per gun; that's lower than Australia, England, or Japan. We are among the lowest in the developed world too:

You'll find other graphics and figures there. Feel free to reproduce these (it would be nice of you to mention the website), ask for citations, or comment in general.

I'm still working on the one that shows more cars = more car deaths.

Cheers,
