An informal inquiry...

Dave,

I have probably gone over the 6 figure mark in my lifetime on total ammo fired in my 36 years plus of shooting. I don't really think that is a lot compared to pro shooters who may shoot 100,000 rounds a year.
I think my 3 - 4 K a year at the trap and skeet range is the minimal practice needed for me to keep in good form.

OK, I was waiting until the total number of rounds exceeded one MILLION, and it looks like it has.

Please note who the respondents are. Except for a couple new shooters honest enough to admit it, the thread is full of experienced shotgunners with thousands to hundreds of thousands of shells behind them.

And, as far as I can see, none of the Cool Stuff folks have deigned to contribute.

The same folks that love those PG only shotguns but do not take up our kindly old grey haired Moderator's challenge.

The same folks who wax lyrical about the newest "Tactical" EBS from Italy.

I guess this board has shotgunners, and some,uh, shotgun paraphanalia collectors.

(Sermon mode off)....

I think the only thing I have ever added to a shotgun is a good recoil pad and an occasional Bradley white front bead.

Horse trailer, heck, my friend! More like one of those big Euclid earth movers dump trucks.

Kudu, it matters not. Most of my shotguns have been tweaked. Most of that has had to do with triggers, stocks and forcing cones. Addons are egregious ONLY when someone tries to substitute them for expertise or expertise's prerequisite, practice.

First, how long have you been shotgunning? Bout two months

Second, what do you think is your lifetime total number of shells fired? 300

Third, how much did you shoot in the last year? 300 rounds

Fourth, how many shotguns have you owned and how many do you own right now? Just one - Wingmaster 870 26" LC - next up would be an O/U, say a Citori with nice wood

I thought I would use this subject as my first post.

Started shooting April '03
Average maybe a case a week, so that would be about 8,000 rnds.

Mostly trap, also some skeet and clays. Starting to enjoy skeet a bit more.

Own a Beretta Extrema for the field, 682 gold E sporting and a Guerini 20ga. sporting.

(3 shotguns in less than a year! What am I nuts?)

Enjoy this forum a lot. Keep up the good work Dave.

Welcome Duckman! You sure start in style from the guns you bought!!!! :what: :what: Glad to have you aboard.

Actually I'm going to buy a Benelli M1 in the next few months. I like the fact that I can buy an M1S90 and simply change from the 21 inch barrel to a 26 or 28 inch barrel for a very fast shooting field gun.

>First, how long have you been shotgunning?
First began shooting nearly 14 years ago. However, my shotgunning stint didn't begin till I purchased a shotgun as a HD weapon.
I've been shotgunning for three years since my first shotgun purchase back in '00. I bought my shotgun with an emphasis of using the shotgun as a primary home defense tool. However, it wasn't up till last year that I decided to use it for more than blasting empty beer cans and old stuffed animals.

>Second, what do you think is your lifetime total number of shells fired?
7k give or take 1k with many more to come.

>Third, how much did you shoot in the last year?
~1k.

>Fourth, how many shotguns have you owned and how many do you own right now?
Owned? Two. Benelli's M1S90 and Nova (now my girlfriend's)
Own? One. Benelli's M1S90.
More to come? Another Benelli M1S90 and I'm still looking for a good Wingmaster.

Sven, my hunch is that 300 rounds will mushroom into thousands in short order.

Duckman, have we met? We're homeguys. 8K in a year is probably a darn good start. And 3 shotguns is also, but you need a Big Four pump to complete your battery(G).

Blades, good luck. Run a few thousand through that thing and get back to us, please.

Duke, you'd found that one use for a shotgun leads to others. Enjoy...

>>First, how long have you been shotgunning?

I've been at it for about two years now

>>Second, what do you think is your lifetime total number of shells fired?

I'm just rounding the corner on 3000

>>Third, how much did you shoot in the last year?

Between 800 and 900 rounds

>>Fourth, how many shotguns have you owned and how many do you >>own right now?

Just one; an 870. I have yet to find the need for anything else.

1) I have been "shotgunning" for about twenty years, on and off, mostly off.

2) Not sure about totals, but it should be in the low ten thousands. Many of those were .410's shot as I was learning as a teen. As I get older, the number per year seems to be dropping although the last few months have seen an uptick.

3) In the last year, I shot about 800 shells.

4) I own six shotguns, counting my Christmas present. I have pumps in 12-gauge (870), 20-gauge (Ithaca M37), 28-gauge (BPS), and .410 (BPS). I also have a 12-gauge rifled slug gun (M37). My Christmas present is a Citori in 28-gauge. This is my first O/U and was purchased because it was such a great deal.

I consider myself to be a rank amateur shotgunner. My skills are in vast need of improvement. I lack consistency. One day I will be "on" and not miss, and the next day my percentage will be cut in half.

I've been shotgunning since I was 12, so 16 years. I figure that the last three have been the most serious as that was when I first discovered competition.

Total rounds fired? No eartlhy idea! :D Me and my 870 were pest control for 380 acres of bird and rabbit infested farmland for a whole lot of years. :p

This year? As far as I can estimate by looking at my match schedule and ammo expenditures, about 3,000 or so. Not nearly as much as I would like though. I hope to increase that number next year as finances allow. (pistol 6,000, rifle 5,000 approx.)

I have owned 3 870s, a 500, and now a Saiga 12. I want to get one more 870 and turn it into the world's only pump action racegun. :D

"I want to get one more 870 and turn it into the world's only pump action race gun"....

My friend, told you that while 870s do not breed, they do multiply. Let us see the result when you're done. Thanks...

Dave, I'm doing it in response to all of those guys out there with the tricked out X2s, Super 90s, and Remington Comp Masters. It is going to be setup like that only be an 870. I can hear the crys of anguish already! :D Pumpgunners Unite!

1) 10 years

2) total, between 12 and 20 gauges, 1000, maybe.

3) 50-100 this year

4) I own two. one shortbarrelled 20 gauge topper with a bead and no choke, and a mossberg 500 with ghost rings, a sling and a light.

For me the GR sights are NECESSARY. As soon as i get the sights designed and built, the topper will have them too. I'm a rifleman first.

Shotgunning for a 'tad' over 30 years...started real young. ;)

Overestimating shells fired is easy to do, but I couldn't have fired less than 200,000 and probably not over 300,000. Almost all 12 gauge which is probably why I can't remember how many I shot... :D .

Last year only about 3,000 shots which is barely shooting.

I own 3 O/U's and 1 auto...1100 of course. All guns are used for different sports, no duplicates anymore. The 1100 is saved for new shooters, hunting if needed, whatever.

Correia,

We have had a Pump Race Gun for many many years already...
Granted not a safe and recommended practice, but a '97 runs quicker than a semi, just don't release trigger and shuck like crazy. :D

I like guns stock, SX2 's run great as they are IME/IMO, heck a bunch of guns do.

I get into shooting pumps and grab another platform and well you know, no matter how hard you try to shuck a O/U , SxS, Semi, or Single shot...It won't shuck.

Like learning to drive "with three on the tree"...where'd the shifter go...oops it fell on the floor...:p

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Yes Dave we met at PG a couple of months ago.
We shots a few rounds of trap together, chatted a bit. I shot your 870 a few times and you shot my 682 gold E

You told me about this site, just took me a while to chime in.

I still go there whenever I can, shot 4 rounds of skeet today. Hope to see you again.

The Red Duck league they have there is a good time, you should try it when it starts again in the spring.

Happy Holidays!

Born in '59.

Shot my Grandpa's old single shot Stevens when I was 5 y/o. It was a 12ga. They got a kick out of it when it knocked me on my butt.....so did I!

Lifetime # of shells?: 12ga alone I'd guess 40K. Could be more.

Shells this year?: over 2k

Shotguns owned previously?: 14 (none owned now)

Shotguns now?: 8, with two more on the menu (Benelli M1S90 Tactical, 870 Bird gun, 870 slug gun, custom 870 "Witness Magnum", Mossberg 590A1 Vang Comp'd with Surefire forearm, Browning A5 Lt 12 Belgian 1958 vintage round knob, H&R 176 Topper Magnum 10ga "shorty", and a SKB XL100 gas gun)

Next on the list: A nice O/U in 12, and a SxS in either 20 or 28ga for the smaller birds.

Cheers,
Mike

1. about a year (got my shotgun for christmas last year)
2 and 3 have the same answer: at least 2000 (that's just a vague estimate)
4. I've only owned one shotgun (Winchester SX2), but my family has two others (a Benelli SBE and an Ithaca Lightning).
As for the technology discussion, I've only tried a few things differently with my gun. The first of which was a fiber optic front sight that my dad brought home one day to try. I shot one round of trap with it and took it off because apparently my eyes will only focus on one orange thing at a time and they kept focusing on that damn pipe. Ever since then I've just used the single bead that came on the gun.
I've also bought a "poorman's mag tube recoil reducer" from Tom Morton and Co. that I like and have kept (although it's probably a psychological thing more than anything). My last purchase was a Briley extended Full choke tube. I bought it partially because a lot of the people on shotgunworld say how brileys pattern better than any factory tube, but mostly because it was getting to be a PITA to have to tighten my factory choke tube with a wrench halfway through a round of trap. However, it does feel like the briley tube patterns more consistently and has less holes than the factory tube, but maybe I'm just getting better :D. The only other things I plan on buying in the near future are a T&S shell catcher and possibly a hunter's helper from Cabelas so I'll have a place to rest my gun while I'm not shooting (yeah, I know I'm a wimp ).
