Recently, I've been noticing my inclination towards lever guns and single action revolvers. I pulled my first trigger on a Winchester 9422 when I was about four or five years old. My father bought me my first gun, a Ruger Single Six convertible for my twelfth birthday. As of late, I've been drawn to my Marlin 336 and my SAA clone (which is unfortunately at the gun doctor). How many THR members are inclined towards the types of guns that you started out on?

I still have my SxS Monkey Wards 20 bore. I wore out all of my Daisy/Crosman BB guns though. My first revolvers were a S&W 29 44 Magnum and a Colt Python 357 Magnum. Dirty Harry and Starsky & Hutch were big back then.

My first pistol was a nickel series 70 commander 1911. It was stolen, but I have three others. Though I have other handguns, the 1911 is still my favorite.

Interesting question. My gut reaction is "yes," of course we're drawn to what we started with, but in my case the answer is "no." My dad did a lot of bird hunting, and the first two guns I owned, which he gave me, were a .410 and a 20 gauge shotgun. At the time (probably about 14 or 15 years old), I thought it was really cool that those two guns were mine. I used them both for bird and trap shooting.

Years ago, someone broke into my parents' house and took all the guns, including my two shotguns. During my 20s and most of my 30s, I didn't think about guns, and almost never shot any except for a couple bird hunting trips each year. But then I started to get more interested. However, I was most interested in rifles and handguns, which my dad had never owned and which I had never shot (well, almost never, there were a few hunting weekends with buddies at remote cabins that involved some rifle and handgun target shooting). Over the last 10 years, everything I've bought has been a rifle or a handgun, neither of which is close to what I started on.

This surprises me, but it is what it is.

Not really. I had a Sears .22 rifle first, then the first one I bought was Win. lever-action. Now I don't shoot either kind much, although I do have the .22 still. These days it's more handguns and the calibers keep getting bigger! :)

Yep.
1911 and K frames .

My very first was a High Standard Sentenial. I wish I had one for sentimental reasons. I loaned mine to my dad many years ago , half brother stole it - sold it for dope. Sigh...made me sick, still does to think about that.

The first three guns I ever fired are all sitting about 6 feet behind me. When I was first introduced, my dad wasn't really big into various types of guns, just the fun stuff so my first pulls were on a Colt AR-15 SP1, Mossberg 500c and my grandpa's Detective Special.

I also still own the first guns that were actually mine, the first being a .22lr autoloader(not sure of brand name) my parents bought at Wal-Mart a few years back. As of right now I'm the only person who has ever fired it, but if all goes well it will become the first rifle my 6 year old sister will fire on saturday, and a few years from now it will hopefully be the first trigger my little bro gets to pull as well.

Nope. Started with a Beretta (M9 in the Army), which I don't like and will never own. Did most of my early shooting with Glocks, don't plan on ever owning one of those again, either. Guess I'm just disloyal to inanimate objects. :D

My first handgun was a 1911A1 Rem Rand. Although I have not stuck with Rem Rand, I have stuck with the basic platform as made by Colt. :D

Kinda sorta.

My first shotgun was a 12 ga. single-shot (not sure what brand). I never did get to fire it though. My dad fired it first to check how much recoil it would have before letting me at it. The durned thing wouldn't fire properly. However, I still like single-shot shotguns (Man, I need to get one again, soon.). The first one I ever fired was a Mossberg 20ga. bolt-action with an adjustable choke on the end of the barrel.

My first rifle was a Marlin 336C, chambered in .30-30. I don't have one right now, but I do have a Rossi copy of the Win92 that I enjoy shooting.

The first handgun I fired was my dad's S&W 686. I own it now and shoot it quite frequently. In fact, I actually carry it from time-to-time.

However (as the other shoe drops), none of the above are my preferred platforms. My favorite shotgun is quickly going from a Mossberg 500 to a Remington 870. Still, it's a pump rather than single-shot or bolt-action. My favorite rifles are semi-autos, EBR's mostly. My preferred handgun platform is the 1911, particularly Para-Ordnance's LDA. (My favorite single handgun will always be my dad's old 686 though, for obvious sentimental reasons.)

I started on an air pistol, but I don't think that counts. :D

The first "real" gun I shot was my grandfather's Ruger MKII. I have since bought my own and am really loving it.

I still own my Marlin 22 bolt action that I got for my 14th birthday. I also own my second gun which was a Colt Detective Special. When I started shooting at the age of twelve dad started me on his Highway Patrolman (using 38 spc w/wadcutters). For many years I wasn't interested in revolvers and looked disdainfully at the M28 as a boat anchor. Just a big heavy chunk of gun. That was 24 years ago. In the past eight months I've added three M28's and a M27 to my collection. Those revovlers are great. Dad just chuckles.

My first pistol was a 9mm Makarov - I still have 4 of them.

Yup. My first gun I purchased was a Ruger SA. The last 3 guns I've bought and the next one I will buy...all Ruger SA's Yeah, I guess that style has stuck with me. :p

When I was a young child, my dad told me about the military use of the 1911 pistol (my dad wasnt' into guns and never served in the military but everyone knew about the 1911)
When I was a kid I had a plastic full sized green 1911 toy pistol/bank.
One of the first centerfire handguns I ever fired was a Colt 1911.
When I went to visit my grandmother, I always asked her if I could handle the Colt 1911 my grandfather brought back from France in 1917 after his service in the All American Division.
When I was a kid I spent a lot of time listening to my uncles, neighbors, and family friends talking about their service during WWII: some of the stories invovled the use of the Colt 1911.
The first centerfire autoloading pistol I ever bought was a Colt 1911.
Since that time (1982) I have owned a Colt 1911.
When I decided to compete in IPSC, I did so with a straight out of the box Colt 1911.
When I decided to get a CCW, I listed a Colt 1911 on my card.
When I decided to compete in IDPA I chose a Colt 1911.
When I started taking classes at Gunsite and Frontsight I showed up with a Colt 1911.
I own a lot of handguns (over 50), yet I never considered carrying, or competing with anything else.

So, I guess you might be able to count me among those that are inclined towards the types of guns that you started out on

Kinda Sorta. I started with an AMT hardballer, which now sits in the safe, unfired for years. I do have several other 1911s that get fired on a regular basis though. I rarely shoot my snub 38 and G17. Finally got my Para Companion back from the 'smith, so it will definately find its way back into my rangebag, and eventually CCW.

Absolutely yes. I cannot get around target shooting and target rifles. Right now I am getting my competition fix with an AR-15. However, a proper smallbore rifle would be right at home in my hands as well. Bet you can guess how I learned to shoot! ;) And I abhor benchrests, prefering to test accuracy from sling-supported prone when possible. And scopes? Only on a hunting rig, please.

So I'd say yes, it is hard to give up doing things the way you were taught to do them at the start! :)

I trained on a Sig P210, and I've always gravitated back to them. Besides the fact that I'm guaranteed accuracy and reliability straight out of the box, the handling and firing habits I picked up with the Sig (1st round DA, decocking before holstering) just seem natural to me.

I've fired other guns and liked them, namely H&Ks and 1911s, but I have noticed one unalterable preference: I have to have an exposed hammer. To this day, I can't get accustomed to something on which I can't see the hammer.

Yes, I suppose so. First gun I shot was a 1911. First handgun I ever owned was a 1911. If asked today what my favorite guns are, I'd probably say that I love the ergonomics of the BHP and the ergonomics and economics of the CZ lineup, but my favorites for playing around with are still 1911s.

Can't really say the same for rifles. First rifle I remember shooting was a 22 semi auto, then a 30-06 and a 50 cal muzzle loader. I've never owned a muzzle loader, generally prefer 243s, 308s, 270s and 25-06s to 30-06s, and I can't forsee buying a 22 semi auto rifle any time soon... Those CZ bolties are just so darn nice! :p

hehehe, I just bought a Rossi coachgun because the family used to own one when I was growing up. I need a lever action for cowboy shooting and have decided on the Marlin for the simple reason that we used to own a Marlin as well and it is what I learned to shoot with.
