Anyone still bolt action shotgun hunt?

Thank you all for the stories.. It is nice to know you are still out there!

Marlin Model 55 Centennial model 12 ga Goose Gun. I use it for drones due to the lack of geese out here in the desert. 36" barrel

Marlin was The Original Goose Gun, not Mossberg. Wish I had the 10 ga.

My first shotgun was a cut down Marlin bolt gun with the two round steel mag. Barrel was 20" and it kicked a lot. I loved it, but at 15 I loved anything that went boom. I have a 410 bolt Stevens at the moment. It needs a choke screwed back on it. Once I locate a choke I'm using it for jumping forest grouse.

It's nice to hear others still using bolt-action shotguns. Thank you all for the stories...

They are kind of cumbersome to load and operate. I've shot a few, and they shoot OK, just not the most user friendly action.

Yes the action on the Marlin 55 has a lot to desire. But with the 36" barrel and 3" magnums it will reach out and touch the sky!
sitting on the butt end its almost 5 ft tall.

Every time someone recommends a single shot scatter gun for a "survival" gun (which happens very often) I wonder why nobody ever considers a bolt action instead. The bolt action is cumbersome compared to pumps, autos and doubles but followup shots are IMO much faster than a single shot.

I got second shots off at pheasants with a single shot H&R by holding a shell in my foregrip hand, never got one off at a duck with a bolt action. My third game gun was a double triggered SxS. Always got a second shot off with that one.

Probably not. Never had the opportunity. In the thread on single shot shotguns, several people mentioned being able to fire fast follow up shots with them by holding several shells through the knuckles. One was all I thought of when I went pheasant hunting at 12. By my first duck hunt at 14, Dad had traded the H&R for a Savage bolt action, then traded that for a Savage 311 for me the next year. Then dropped me back down to one, maybe 2 shots if I were lucky, from his back up 1100, which was heavy abused in the duck blinds of northern MN. I rebuilt the 1100 over the next 2 years, but bought an 870 right after I turned 18, I always had 3 shots available for ducks after that.

I had a Savage 212 that would shoot 1" groups at 100 yard with Hornady SST slugs. Even though it was supremely accurate and very well made, it didn't cycle worth a hoot and I never really loved it. But man, was it accurate. It shot tighter at 100 than some of my rifles will.

My deer gun choice would be a rifled 870.
If going smoothbore, a Mossberg 500.
See no ethics enhancement by choosing a bolt gun.

But if ya subscribe to the view that pumps and autos make for sloppy shooters............NECG has a 20 ga built on a Ruger #1.

If I was gung ho deer hunting, that'd be pretty cool and worth the price.
My hunting spot not that good, may have 10 yrs of hunting left, and am not mandated to use shotgun...........so it isn't tempting me.

Well thank you all for your stories, It nice to know skill is still out there.

LOL, You should see the looks we get for using them! Until they see that deer!

I forgot, besides sst's, Remington and Savage have a good ballistic slug that is great for those shots.

I hunted with a Mossberg 183 in .410 in my youth.

This thread inspired me and I spent some time on Gunbroker and snagged a JC Higgins 583 in 20 gauge for $180. It arrived today and my son and I have already shot a round of clay targets with it. It is in fantastic condition, and is a lot of fun to shoot. We are looking forward to small game hunting with it this fall.

I remember them well, I bought my Dad one many yrs back to match his that I used as a kid. There are a few out there missing bolts, and can be found for extra parts.

My uncle had a few 410 bolt actions and the majority were Savage/Steven. I went from using my dad's old Montgomery Ward?Western Field (Savage made) single shot to borrowing a bolt action from my uncle until I had enough lawn mowing money saved up to by my Mossberg 500. I have been using 410's for hunting everything except waterfowl since I was a kid.

When I was a kid my father, brother, and I all shot single shot 410 or 12ga......squirrels, rabbits, quail, pheasant, prairie chickens, coons, possums, pigeons, and the occasional duck. Even killed chicken eating dogs with the single shot 410 or a single shot 12ga. My father finally saved all his pennies and bought a Remington 870 12ga. We all desperately wanted a "repeating" shotgun. That meant a pump or a semi-auto, but NEVER a bolt action shotgun. To us that was the worst of the worst. I have no idea where that thinking came from, but it was unshakeable. How was I to know they could be so useful??
