AR Builds -- What Parts Did You Choose and Why??

I'm in the process of building another one now. The rest of the parts will be in tomorrow.

-10.5" Ballistic Advantage barrel-I've heard really good things about these. The come with a MOA guarantee and are on sale for under $100.
-Yankee Hill flip up front sight/gas block-because they are indestructible and I wanted a clamp on. They just plain make life easier.
-MOE SL handguards, because they're almost indestructible, slim and light
-Bolt/carrier group from Bravo Company. I can't say they're the best, but they sell good stuff.
-Upper was just some generic slick side because it was cheap. Of course, after I ordered it, I found another Daniel Defense upper I bought years ago, but too late. Wanna try the slick side anyway.
-Lower is from New Frontiers, it's carbon fiber. I went this route because I wanted to see how light I could get...and they're blowing them out for around $20.
-Brace, because this one is a pistol. I went with a KAK Shockwave brace and buffer tube. It's really light. I got the tube and brace for $50, so why not try it out.
-Buffer is a Spike's T2, tungsten buffer. These are really smooth.
-LPK is from Aero, sans FCG.
-FCG is Geissele SSA-E. I love these triggers
-Optic is a TA44 1.5X ACOG. After having used one of these, I just can't go back to red dots.
-Grip is a MagPul K2. It actually makes a difference on a pistol.

I think you’ll like that Ballistic Advantage barrel, that’s their 10.5” I posted in #401 with a JP AGB. I’ve used two BA barrels for previous builds, both 16” .625” pencils and they’re good shooters for the money. +1 on the K2 grip. Also waiting on parts due tomorrow including 2 Aero M4E1 Enhanced uppers, another stripped lower for a future build, and more small parts than I can recall.

Finally bit the bullet and trying an AGB.

Man, it sounds like you have some toys coming too. I was supposed to get my barrel and other stuff from MAS Defense today, buy USPS is late.

Yeah, I was trying to do this build on the cheap to see what I could come up with. Although I have no real need for a 10.5 rig, I was looking around and found this site that had BA barrels for right around $100 and I took it as an omen. lol

The slick side upper is a blem and I got it for $40. As I mentioned, the lower was $20. Aero LPK sans FCG was like $25. I have buffers and springs and all kinds of crap laying around from years of accumulating stuff. I already had the Geissele trigger and the ACOG from a rifle that I built and sold to a guy who said he didn't need and didn't want to pay for the trigger or the scope. Too bad for him, you missed a nice deal on a great trigger and scope. I guess some peeps just don't know what the important parts are.

Anyway, I'm actually starting to get excited about this build and that hasn't happened in a long time.

I've been out of the game for a while. As far as ARs go, it's just been mostly shooting the ones I've had for years or fixing someone else's. Man, what was hot back when I was into it hard is still hot, but a couple of names have really risen. Like Spike's and Aero. Wow. I still have 2 Spike's lowers left from four that I bought YEARS ago when I was getting them for $49 each. That's why I'm taking the chance on the carbon fiber lower. When it takes a crap, I'll just transplant everything and my pistol will gain about 8oz.

I'm thinking that I'm gonna pick up an Aero upper and lower set for my next serious build. They have some pretty innovative features (innovative to me anyway). I'm gonna build be a single stamp rifle. I'm gonna pick a suppressor and then get a barrel length that will get me to 16". I still need to research this and figure out what route I'm gonna take, but it's what I want.

Can you pin and weld a suppressor?

Can you pin and weld a suppressor?

Ive only seen the fake ones done that way but I suppose it’s possible, though unadvised for when it needs serviced. As I understand it from a few fellow THR members the best route is a double stamp or, barring that, a good brace. I’ve got an SBA-3 on my 7.5” that’s pretty comfortable and uses a carbine extension.

I’m just beginning to read up on the SBA-4 but honestly having a good number of stocks I like already and the price of either SB Tactical braces gets within shouting distance of a stamp and better options.

I’m still pretty green when it comes to ARs and configurations that work well, part of my plan seems to be order a few different parts each month and assemble one to see what I like. Neither cheap nor efficient but I rarely make the same mistake more than twice. :D

I've got a lower on the way and have no idea what to do with it.

I have two M4 carbines, a 300 Blk pistol, a 20" .223 Wylde upper and a 7.62x39 upper.

I'm thinking about either a 350 Legend rifle or a 450 BM of some sort.

I hear ya. I'm really up in the air right now, with what I want to do and how I'm gonna do it. I saw something at my LGS that really peaked my interest. It was a 700 in .308 with an integral suppressor. The guy called it a single stamp gun. Hmmmm.

W
Nice looking rifle. I like the green furniture, it's a welcome break from black and FDE.

Question: Why did you go with a FSP and Delta Rings instead of a free float M-LOK handguard?
What's wrong with black? This used to be a Colt M4 Carbine, Criterion 18" barrel with 2a armament handguard, A2 buttstock, CMC 3# trigger and a Magpul front sight. The sling and magazine are what I had left from a pre-ban Colt Match Target that I had to "sell" to an employee in lieu of a paycheck 25 or so years ago. I took that 3 power Nikon off and put the carry handle back on. I did buy some green mags for my Grendel to switch things up though.

Got a few boxes on Friday as did my FFL so after a few home projects I got to work on the upper then finished the lower Saturday morning. Still debating another RRA 2-stage or going all out with a “box” trigger which I’d swap into a nicer build down the road.

All in all I’m pleased with how it turned out.

Nothing brightens up a weekend like something to do.

That’s Luth-AR’s “The Paddle” bolt catch, another new venture for me, and so far I really like it.

Why everyone doesn’t adopt Aero’s Enhanced Upper platform is a question that will now haunt me. This receiver was an absolute joy and time saver. The down side is its marriage to Aero handguards exclusively. They make some great ones but I prefer more options to fewer.

Another product I was eager to try out, Troy Squid Grips. Non-slip rubbery textured M-LOK inserts. Another re-order item.

That's looks to be a PEQ laser light combo for use with night vision. Night vision has it's limitations with what it's focus is on far, near or in between. And many are manually focused, so this causes a big problem trying to line up sights, red dots, scopes, etc.; whereas with a laser ones night vision can have the target in focus and only have to worry about the laser being on the target. Typically, the PEQ's have daytime and nighttime (night vision use) settings.

Excellent, thanks!

Ok, made my revisions and think I have my 10.5 build in it's final form...https://photos.app.goo.gl/Na2FdsAJSbrJjTiaA

My chosen recipe from stem to stern...

1. A2 Compensator. The comp helps with follow up shots and isn't as concussive as a brake. I'm seriously thinking about suppressing this thing. Yankee Hill has a little suppressor that isn't too expensive, is pretty compact and from what I've read, does a good job.

2. Ballistic Advantage 10.5" barrel. BA has a good reputation and the barrel comes with a MOA guarantee. I have to say that it didn't disappoint.

3. Yankee Hill flip up front sight/gas block. These are cost effective and well made.

4. MagPul MOE handguards. I know, it isn't free float and isn't too cool, but they are functional, they have M-Lok slots and they DON'T get hot. I've been alternating between these and the SL guards. I haven't decided which I like better functionally, although I like the minimalist look of these.

5. Upper receiver is Daniel Defense. I have a couple of these that I've been recycling for years. Always a good tight fit with barrel extensions and the rails are STRAIGHT and level. I can zero my scope in one position, move it to another position and it's still 100% on.

6. MagPul BUS. They don't cost as much as others, but they work and don't add any weight.

7. 1.5X ACOG. One of two that I've had for years. If you're in the mood for one of those "buy once, cry once" things, this would be it. I can't even entertain the thought of going back to a conventional red dot. Not for MY rifle anyway.

8. The charging handle is nothing special. I actually prefer the smaller models. I don't have any problems racking the bolt with one finger.

9. SBA3 brace and buffer tube. I was running an SBA Mini with a Phase 5 Hex tube and it was rock solid. Very comfortable. I couldn't have asked for anything more, except a little more length when going prone. I still prefer the look and feel of the Mini, but the SBA3 is more functional when going prone. As it turned out, when I setup the SBA3 and found my preferred setting, it was the exact same length as the Mini. I really don't know how often I'll NEED to go prone with this little 10.5" setup. I may go back to the Mini and throw this on the .22 build.

10. This is a brand spankin new lower. I had it in my head that I was going to go with the Aero M4E1 lower because it has some neat features, but in the end I wasn't wild about the "billet" look of the Aero and my brand loyalty to Spike's won out. This is the "Pew, Pew" model in all black. I might add some color fill and use black to just add a highlight.

11. Lower parts kit is Strike Industries. Man, I've gotta say, this is the first time I've used their LPK and I'm face palming myself for not having done it sooner. Yes, the kit without the fire control group was twice as expensive as the Aero kit, but it's nice. Ambi safety that will do either long or short throw. Take down and pivot pins have a nice little touch to their shape. The plungers aren't just some pot metal and have tails on them that made installing the pivot pin a breeze. The enhanced bolt catch is nice too. I set the safety up for short throw and it's really nice. I can go hot with my thumb and go safe with a swipe of my trigger finger.

12. The grip is MagPul K2. Just the right angle.

13. The fire control group is a Geissele SSA-E. I have a couple of these too. Another "buy once, cry once" affair. In my book, the best bang for the buck trigger for an AR.

14. The bolt group is Bravo Company. Good solid stuff for the parts that really matter.

Just bought a 6.5 Grendel upper from Sanders Armory. A guy at my range invited me to a 500 yard shooting event and his Grendel was so impressive. I called Sanders Armory and bought the 18 inch match grade upper for under $500. He shot sub MOA at 100 thru 500 yards and blew my mind. I’ve been looking for years and finally pulled the trigger. I have AR’s in 204 Ruger, a 350 Legend pistol length, a high end 223/556 that is one ragged hole if i’m doing my part, but it looses it’s magic out past 300 yards. It was the fact that the Grendel just keeps getting better and better and so very much development in the past few years, has brought it into a solid long distance contender. Load development and bolt to chamber improvement has made it a force to be reckoned with in budget end match shooting. My friend Dave builds precision rifles and he told me that he is building more and more comp rifles in the Grendel. I bought the 18 inch side charger because it is a 5R rifling match barrel that is hand lapped by S.A. aIt comes with a matching BCG. But I plan to hunt with it also or I would have went longer. I.ll take pics as soon as I am ready to shoot it with a Leupold VX3 4x16 mounted. That should be enough scope for 500 yards and ringing steel at 800 yards.

Oh, I didn't post this one...https://photos.app.goo.gl/LeC1sB4MPNitnRzw9

The one on the top, I already posted about, but the lower two are .22s.

The second one with the Bushnell on it, from muzzle to stock...
1.Kaw Valley linear compensator because I needed something to make the 9" barrel a little longer for the stupid long handguard that I used. I'll just use it until I can pick up a simple flash can or something.

2. Model One Sales free float tube. This one is 12" and some change long. I used it because I had it. I do have a 10" on the way. I really like using these tubes. They are inexpensive because the come with an aluminum barrel nut and they are LIGHT. They are actually lighter than or as light as going with plastic handguards or other free float setups because there's no steel parts and it's really rigid.

3. The barrel is a 9" CMMG. It's pretty nice and it shoots. Really well.

4. The upper receiver is from MAS Defense. It's a slick side and I think it looks clean. MAS Defense sells some decent stuff at really good prices. I got the upper for $39, I think. It's a blem and I still haven't found the blemish.

5. The bolt group is CMMG with a dedicated collar for the barrel.

6. The sight is a Bushnell TRS-26. I just found out about this model and wanted to try it out. If I was gonna do it over again, for the money, I'd grab a Vortex. Still, the Bushnell isn't bad. It has a big sight window and a very clean dot that will allow for some very precise shooting.

7. The charging handle is just a plain jane model that I modified with JB Weld to keep casings from getting jammed in the handle and to stop the gas from coming through.

8. The lower is a Spike's Tactical with the Spider. I've had it for a long time and it was the basis for my 14.5" AR build that I pulled apart. I love these receivers. I'll tell you how long I've had this lower. I bought it brand new when Spike's wasn't a name yet and got it at my range where I shoot for $59. Try to find a Spike's for that now. LOL

9. The lower parts kit is Aero, as is the trigger. Nothing special. I'm seriously thinking about dropping a Geissele in it.

10. The grip is a Magpul K2. I like the grip angle on these. They really lend themselves to the style of shooting that small AR requires. But, I think I'm gonna look into a couple of Bravo Company Gunfighter Mod 1 or Mod 3 grips.

11. The brace is an SB Mini and the tube is a Phase 5 Hex model designed specifically for the Mini. It has a notch on the back to help to keep the Mini from moving. I did, however, put a layer of Gorilla duct tape on the end. It ain't movin now. In fact, I hope I don't need to get it off. I can't tell you how much I like the SB Mini/Hex tube combo. It's pretty rigid with the strap wrapped very tightly. It's made of all rubber, not plastic like the SBA3. It's also very comfortable to shoot with. If you notice and compare the 5.56 just above it sporting the SBA3, the Mini is the same length and when you fully extend the SBA3, it's only marginally longer. The Mini/hex tube is a GREAT combo. It's super light and unobtrusive.

Now, the one on the bottom, just about everything on the upper is the same as the other, except that it's sporting a shorter free float tube. I build this for my dad who is 82 and wanted something light. Really light and this thing is really light. It feels like a toy.

1. The red dot is an ADCO that I picked up a couple of decades ago. My dad likes the longer tube. The Bushnell was actually supposed to go on his gun, but he likes the ADCO. You know, old dog...new tricks...he shoots with one eye closed and I'm not gonna try to teach him other wise because of that smile on his face. He says he can see more though it and the dot is nice and big.

2. The lower is a plastic job from ATI. It's one of their hybrid lowers with the metal inserts at the back, pivot pin and trigger area. It looks really cool and has that billet look to it. I ran it on a 5.56 for about a thousand rounds so I figure it'll be fine on the .22 and my dad likes the way it looks.

3. The brace and tube are both KAK blade. The tube has the divots in it so that it won't move or spin, but you can easily adjust the length of pull. AND it's LIGHT. It's only a .22 and not much recoil, so I didn't see a need for anything more comfortable.

More parts rolling in, including some for the new build for my 16 year old daughter. She’s been a bit bummed since her job in boarding at the vet. was put on hold but has done an outstanding job caring for younger siblings. What better therapy than a new rifle.

Aero M4E1 Enhanced lower
Aero M4E1 Enhanced upper
Aero Quantum Enhanced 15” MLOK hand guard
Jard 3 lb. flat trigger
JP Enterprises adjustable gas block
Luth-AR Paddle bolt release
Battle Arms Development magazine catch
Phase 5 magazine button, Ambi Battle Latch charging handle, Ambi Safety Selector (and more in transit).

I’ve lost count of everything I’ve ordered this past month, I’m just hoping an entire rifle eventually materializes.

Not for this build, but picked up the side discharge version of the Raptor in anticipation of a very expensive muzzle device.

Man, with my last two builds that I'm going to keep for myself, I've been like a school girl trying to figure out how to dress for the prom. I've changed this and that on my 10.5" 5.56 build and 9" .22 build, but think I'm finally satisfied.

5.56 on the left sporting a Vortex PST that swaps places with a Sig Romeo 4T, and the .22 on the right...https://photos.app.goo.gl/VG9dxinqAGgByEqb8

What I changed on the 5.56 is the optics, having chosen to leave the 1.5X ACOG behind, the MOE handguard in favor of a STNGR VLCN 10", a BAD lever and I got rid of the Kaw Valley linear whatever in favor of the Strike Industries Gen 2 J Comp. Actually not much difference in sound level, but it shoots FLAT with the J Comp.

On the .22, I went with a 7" M-Lok rail and a simple A2 flash hider. This thing turned out to be a tack driver at 100 with CCI Standard Velocity. It's my new golf ball killer.

There are now 4 armed women in my household as my oldest daughter committed to the AR platform this week. Her rifle’s details:

Aero Precision M4E1 Enhanced upper/lower, Quantum Enhanced 15” MLOK Handguard, Aero receiver extension w/H2 buffer, 16” Ballistic Advantage .625” pencil profile, Jard 3 lb. flat face trigger, Magpul ACS stock/MOE grip, Phase 5 Ambi Battle latch charging handle, P5 magazine release button and ambi selector switch in gray, Luth-AR The Paddle bolt release, Kaw Valley Magnum linear comp, and of course a ToolCraft 158 Nitride BCG.

All it lacks now is optics, thinking the spare 1-4x 32 Bushnell Prime will pair up nicely on an Aero mount.

Overall a pretty clean build.

I wanted to thank Gunny for his suggestion of a ACT AR-15 trigger. I bought one for my Del-Ton and I am very happy with it. It has a nice clean break with no mush or creep.

C086774C-F430-48C6-B405-C77FF26A9388.jpeg Ruger AR556 came in trade. Just rails.com had this free float handguard to replace the quad-rail that was on it when I got it. The red dot is being replaced with a sightmark unit that was really cheap and had good reviews which will be a Father’s Day gift. I have a thin riser to use if I need it, but the sightmark looks a bit taller than the current setup. Foregrip was laying around. It’s just to look nifty for now. Not sure if I will even leave the pic rail on the bottom of the handguard, it feels good and is smooth without it.

Per the title... I need ideas. Please post your parts lists and explain why you chose them. Also list the approximate prices if you can remember.

This thread has nothing to do with what I want or need. Again, I just want ideas.
What is the objective of your build? From tacticool to accurate. Gotta know that up front. Big problem people have is that they don't have that picture in their head before they start. They end up with a cross dressing Mr. Potato Head.
