AR platform as a woods gun

To me, it's not, "It won't work," so much as, "There's some other stuff that's better."

Well said, we all have to decide which set of trade offs fit what we want. What is important to me, may not be to you and the opposite. BTW hunting is supposed to be fun, so even if what you want to do doesn't make sense to the rest of us go ahead and have fun with it! If you want to hunt with an AR for your woods gun, then have at it. As long as its legal and you are safe then it really doesn't matter anyway!

I'm looking forward to getting my 16" 6.5 Grendel built for my do-it-all woods gun. I'm thinking with a skeleton stock, lightweight slick handguards, the 16" barrel, and a compact scope, it'll be a nice package.

To me, it's a gun I carry in the woods to shoot pigs and deer. No stands, no sitting - for use while walkin' and stalkin'. Shots are taken offhand at moving/running game.

Woods gun is just another name for brush gun. Crowded conditions. Not like out in open country. Gotta deal with vines and thick undergrowth, sneaky-snaking around playin' Injun.

River bottom country. Or in Texas mesquite thickets--or, God help ya, in catclaw and prickly pear.

So, light and handy and not lots of projections to snag. I generally take the sling off when I'm working the brush.

Ranges are generally up close and personal, so you don't have to play Ma Bell which means short barrels don't lose enough velocity to matter.

All that sort of stuff goes into the thinking about the package...

The 16'' AR is almost perfect as a brush gun imho. Think about it- short length, collapsible stock, aluminum recievers, ghost ring sights. When carried african style, that is upside down slung under the left arm its extremely quick to deploy and doesnt protrude any further than your body when walking. The bigger calibers on the standard reciever are ideal but even 556 with the heavy loadings have proven deer getters where legal. My only recomendations are get the fastest rate of twist rifling to permit the use of the heaviest bullets and use a 20rd magazine.

When did a lever action 30-30 become a "platform"?
When you could do this to it.
