Hello I'm contemplating having my sporterized Type 99 Arisaka rebarreled to a more contemporary chambering. largely due to the oversized barrel. I would like to know if there's anything special about rebarreling one of these rifles. Do they use a normal barrel shank with STD or Metric threads, what is the shank size and thread pitch.

I look forward to some input.

The shank and pitch is M26x1.75, which is so close to 1.0"x14 as to make not much difference. Many thousands of Arisakas have been rebarrelled in the U.S., so it is no big problem for a decent gunsmith.

Threads are metric, approximately 1.5 mm pitch. Shank is .700 inches long by 1.050 inches in diameter.

The old NRA gunsmithing guide notes that you can cut 17 tpi and force the barrel home with a good lube (they suggest white lead, but you can't get that these days). The receiver is hard enough to reform the threads and make for a tight fit, according to the book.

Type 38 receivers were made with 14 tpi. Who knows why the Japanese decided to go metric in the throes of WWII?
