Austin THR shoot -- Austin Rifle club 3/31 11AM

*checks calendar* UT spring-break is 12-17 Mar, so I'll be back for the weekend of the 24th.

Has anyone PMed the folks from the last 2 or 3 big Austin THR shoot? If you're bored at work, it'd be great if you can PM them w/ a link to this thread, as most of them stated they'd like a heads-up if a new shoot brews.

If you do so, please post here so that we don't double-tap them.

Last shoot (Jan '06) had about 30 "maybes" which turned into 18 actual shows. Great time was had by all.

I've been pretty busy lately, so it's been a bit difficult to check the boards, but I would love to do this again. ARC is probably the best option. Let me know what's decided.

I'll do that. I've gone over the last 3 Austin THR shoots and compiled the following THR members (alphabetically ordered) who may have expressed an interest. If I missed you, please feel free to PM me. I'll send a PM to all.

I'd be interested in a shoot in late March.

Another option would be Hill Country Rifle Range out between Bee Cave and Dripping Springs. They've got a 300m range, steel human torso silhouettes at 200m, plus target stands at 50m and 100m. Theyve got separate pistol ranges, one 25m with silhouettes. They allow FMJ and 50 cal and until very recently allowed NFA rifles on the rifle range. Subguns are still allowed. It would probably cost us, but Im sure we could clear a deal with the owner Richard for the meet-up.

Hill Country

Hey I know Richard, and he would probably welcome us with open arms. He is closed from Friday 12:00 until Saturday 1 pm. He has targets, ammo, 5 ranges and he likes BBQ beef. I'll be going out there this week, and I'll mention it. He just went up from 5.00 to 10.00 a gun but he will work a deal on a group. I would love to meet all the people from THR. It's a really nice open setting in the hill country with a view!

either ARC or Hill Country Rifle Range is fine w/ me

I think Hill Country Rifle Range is $10 first gun, $2 each additional, which is very reasonable. Especially when you realize that THR meet doesn't happen all that often!

Anyway, I have no preference between ARC or Hill Country Rifle Range, since both ranges are on the fringes of Austin anyway (one's in Manor and the other is in Dripping Springs). When we get closer to March 24, we can have a quick vote.

I could probably make the 24th or 31st of March - just need a bit of advance warning. Would this meet be mainly rifles, mainly pistols, or everything?

he likes BBQ beef.

I can't believe he'd eat beef with all the local cases of Mad Cow that's being hidden from the public! (seriously, he said like 20 cases were being kept quiet at St. David's last year.)

Anyway, I'll shoot there--preferably he can take his crazy pills before we get there. (if not, no biggie, I got a whole bunch of Nutty McCrackers in my family and I deal with them okay.)

Late march is also great for me...was afraid it was gonna be in the middle of spring break for a minute there.

Hoping there is alot of pistol stuff going on...cause that's all I have to bring :)

31 March would be better for UT folks

The UT 40 Acres Fest is on the 24th, and I hope to have most of the UT folks out propagandizing and herding folks into the shooting range.

Is the 31st markedly bad for any particular group of THRfolks?

Not trying to foul things up, but it seems we haven't solidified on a particular late-March day yet.

Oh, by the way... Last I heard from Richard (about a month and a half ago), the end of the world is coming on March 22nd, and he's going to be gone. That might put a kink in trying to schedule anything on the 24th or 31st with him. It might not be the most comfortable environment for any Jewish folks or anyone of color, either.

I'd rather go to ARC, personally. Hill Country has fallen into disrepair (likely due to the upcoming Armageddon), and the target boards are sorta falling apart and such, none of the sandbags have sand in them, decent benches are hard to come by, etc.

okay...put this to vote...

all in favor of the 31st say aye!

all in favor of the 24th say nay!

My vote is aye! (its a payday weekend for me...:D )

I vote March 31 at HCRR

BTW, according to Richard, as of this past weekend, the end of the world is yet again postponed until sometime around this December ;) Richard is mostly harmless and I've been shooting there for about 7 years now. He generally wont bother you if you seem initially unresponsive to hearing "The Truth" or reading his admittedly very creative "literature".

As for the range conditions, the 100m and 50m target stands have been repaired, but you will need to bring your own sand/shooting bags and your own spotting scope if you intend to shoot off the bench and punch holes in paper. Thats all moot for me since I only shoot at the 200m steel silhouettes off the bench from standard field positions with mostly iron sights or 1x battle optics. If I wanted to punch holes in paper I'd go to Office Depot, not the range, though I can see that some people seem to like hole punching.

Until a couple weeks ago you could shoot anything you could shoulder there, including NFA/50cal rifles, but apparently since one of his neighbors found bullets in his yard recently he's suspended shooting full auto rifles on the rifle range but apparently subguns on the pistol range are still good. For those who havent been there in a couple ears, there are no longer any steel silhouettes on the 400m berm due to a property dispute of some sort so all the steel gongs and silhouettes are on the 200m berm.
