I just signed up as a member and this is my first post.

I am looking for a 40. cal. auto that is condusive for a left handed person (myself) I am six foot so a little larger grip won't hurt me. I'm not interested in 9mm or 45acp, maybe a 10mm.

I have looked at the Walther p99 and have read that it has some "flip" to it in the 40. version, I was looking at the FNP 40, but just read last night that some of them were gouging the slide. Now I'm looking at the Sig p220 or p226, I thought the p220 was available at one time in 40. but maybe I'm wrong, are the Sigs ambidexstrious?

Thanks in advance.

so... I have shot all of my handguns using my "off hand" which is my left hand. I am not sure what would need to be done to make the gun more comfortable for a lefty...sure the brass is being thrown to the right.... And?

I dunno.. guess I live in a world that it tailored to righties so I dont see the difference.

I'm sorry, I'm not very familiar with handguns.

I guess what I'm trying to say is some guns have a safety that has to be held down in order to fire. Magazine release, is it ambidextrious. Glocks I know don't have a regular safety. I guess I'm looking for a gun that is as close to being left handed an possible.

Or am I just going to have to adjust?

A lot of the Sigs have their decokers on the left side which would be difficult for a lefty.

Most of the polymer pistols are very good for lefties, such as S&W M&P and Sigma, Glock, Springfield XD, etc.

Thanks for the help!

I checked out the M&P's and th XD's and think I've found something I like.

Thanks for all of your help everyone.

The guy I shoot with is a lefty he shoots Glocks and XD's fine. Left handed, left eye, left side holster. His only problem is he has to sometimes be careful not to let his shirt jam into the ejection port when he shoots from retension position (hip). Just holds it out an extra inch. You also have to get used to cases bouncing off your side when shooting from the hip. Regular aimed shooting is no problem with most pistols. I'd recommend the Glock 19.

The mag release is unfortunatly right handed, nut since he carries his mags on his left side he passes his gun to his right hand while he reloads and drops the mag with his right.

I just learned to shoot right handed with my left eye since I'm more comfortable with my holster on the right and my right hand draws faster.

If Dave Sevigney can pull it off, then why not.

I still shoot rifles lefty with my left eye but I only use combat scopes where I can keep both eyes open. Eotech, Aimpoint, ACOG, etc..

A 1911 with an ambi safety. I use my left index for the slide release, and mu left middle for the mag release. Everything is easy; almost like it was designed for a lefty, as long as the ambi safety is there.

Southaw, checking in

As a lefty, I own an ambi-thumb safety 1911 that runs great. I find having the slide release on the left side of the gun an easy thing to operate with my trigger finger reaching up and stroking it downward. Same with the mag release, except I use my middle finger.

My M&P is about as ambi-friendly as it comes.
XDs are also in the same ballpark.

This is not a Taurus bash, but I don't find their poly-pistols to be lefty-friendly. I have not held the new 800-series or the OSS - I believe they both have ambi thumb safetys, so they would be different. The PT92 is ambi and a good shooter, too.

CZ 75B SA and 85 are ambi. The standard 75B is not.

Go somewhere where they have a bunch of pistols. Ask to handle as many as you can. Chances are you'll find some that you really like. Half the fun is shopping.

HK P7 is pretty lefty friendly. Nearly ambidextrious if you could figure out a way to make ejection go downward.

HK P30 is perfect for lefties. (My son is a southpaw)
The P30 has an ambi mag release and the decocker is on the back of the slide next to the hammer.
Very lefty friendly.

I do everything left handed and I have 3 kahrs and they are perfect. You might love the P40 kahr or the all steel version K40.

I'm a lefty, and I have a P64, CZ82 and a 1911. All of them work well for me. The CZ has an ambi safety; the P64 and my 1911 do not. I carry the P64 hammer down and safety off, the 1911 I just don't carry much unless I'm bumming around in the woods.

In general while fully-ambi makes for good marketing, the only thing that I find necessary to have is an ambi-safety, if it's going to be carried C&L. Ambi-slide lock is a non issue, I have always slingshotted to reload. I've never found any benefit to an ambi mag release either, while my CZ has a button on the right side of the gun, to be used by the left thumb, it's way out of reach and ends up being easier to poke the mag release on the left side with my trigger finger.

HKs are likely the most lefty friendly pistol out right now.

the P7 is completely ambidextrious and the surplus ones from europe are very reasonably priced...but the .40 cal model is pretty ghastly looking.

in .40, you'd be better served by a P30 as i has the ambi safety, mag release and slide stop...plus it has a great adjustable grip

i have to reccomend my CZ75B 40S&W , it has ambi safety and is perfectly workable lefthand , the p2000 is good as well and the CZ85 is near perfect if you're into 9mm...
my CZ75B is the only autopistol i kept when i simplfied my collection...

Only good advice is to adapt to shoot as many different models as possible. With the exception of 1911's and the ambi safeties; you're going to use your index finger for a lot of things like operating the slide lock, magazine release, and decockers (in Sig's case). With a small bit of practice you can be proficient with just about any handgun out there. In the end you'll have better options and can make your decisions based off of which gun is the best for you period.

I too am "wrong" handed with average size hands. Right now I am shooting a Smith & Wesson M&P .40. Bought new it comes with three different hand grips that are interchangeable. This is my first hand gun and I have nothing to compare it against but I will say that I am very pleased with the feel and consistancy. Good luck.
