Okay, AutoMag-owning boys and girls, I have a project in mind that I’d like to lay before you.

In the mid-‘70s, I had a machinist friend make an aluminium scope mount for my AutoMag that replaced the left grip panel and held a tiny 1.7X Hudson Handgunner scope centered over the barrel extension right in front of the rear sight. With that setup, the scope, mount and rings were subject to no more stress than the shooter felt instead of the gazillion Gs mounting on the barrel extension produces. Also, drilling holes in a precious AutoMag wasn’t needed. I sold it when I sold my AutoMags in the early ‘80s.

Now, I have more AutoMags and I want another mount like that one, except that it would have a Weaver/Picatinny rail for current pistol scope mounts. The easy way would be to have a modern shop do a digital model that can be fed into a CNC machine, but the process is too expensive for a single piece. I had an interview with a shop yesterday and if there’s a demand for 20-25 or more, the cost would drop to around $275 each.

So, this post is a market survey. If I can find 20+ shooters who are interested enough to put down a $100 deposit, I can cover the rest of the costs during production. Figure a $275 total cost, including shipping. Production would likely take 3-4 months. If this sounds like something you want and there are enough positive responses, we’ll go ahead. Checks will be held until I get enough to be sure I won’t be left holding the bag, then they’ll be cashed and the production cycle will start. If I don’t get enough checks, I’ll shred the ones I get or return them, your choice.

20-30 years ago I’d be all over this. I just don’t shoot my Automags, Wildey’s, or Grizzlies anymore due to nerve damage.

Good luck in this venture, I hope you can get this done.
