I'd like to see how many other members have "Avenging Angel" revolvers. I have owned quite a few that I've built myself and would like to see other members customizations and have this be a place to share ideas, photos and videos of these interesting guns.
Here's a few that I have made over the past few years

1860 Army .44 (this one is currently for sale on GB)

1849 Pocket. I can't remember if this was .31 or .36

Another 1860 Army. This was the first one I made and has a slightly different muzzle treatment then the one I just made pictured above.

Here is a fun little project I shared a while ago. Accuracy in my hands is all but non existent at ranges much over 15ft

That's quite a collection!

I no guns to show but have a related question.

I have a Pietta 1851 Navy steel .36 (2014 [CM]), and have been somewhat interested in a EIG 3" barrel, wedge, screw, and cylinder on Ebay. The rear of the cylinder looks pretty rough and the nipples look like they have been ridden hard and put up wet. The current bid is <$50.

Will this barrel fit my Pietta? I find sparse info on EIG except that they were an importer and Navy Arms carried them way back in the day.

I'm thinking it is a pig in a poke and that I would be better off just looking for a used barrel for my avenging angel.

What sayest thou?

Jim

I'm really not sure. Perhaps with some fitting it would work.

I love this. What model of Remington is that copying? I don't know Remingtons real well but have considered getting one to whack down. How much work was it to round off the butt?

It is a supposedly Brass Frame Remington 1858. I picked it up uses for somewhere around $60-$70 with the express purpose of hacking it up.

The grip frame is brass so it was very easy to work with, and no finish to worry about. I used a hack saw to whack off the corners and rounded things out with a belt sander. It probably took me twice as long to install the front sight as the whole rest of the job minus finishing.

Rounding the butt and reshaping the grips and grip frame was real easy. I did end up with the grips too small for the grip frame an my first pass, so I just reworked the grip frame to fit the grips.

That is a very nice fantasy pistol! I'm not a Remmy fan, but it appears to me that he has some issues concerning the fit of the bolt/stop slots. The bolt is peening the stop slots because it is too wide on one side.

The same thing occurred with my Pietta 1851 Navy steel .36 until I ordered a new bolt as a trial piece and did quite a bit of fitting. One must only remove metal from the correct side of the bolt to insure that the bolt slides easily into the stop slot and moves the cylinder into "fire" postion before the hammer moves to the "fire" position. Otherwise one gets the drag of the bolt upon the cylinder causing the peening.

Take a peek...

Don't take my word for it: ask Goon.

I tried a snubnose once. It was an over/under breakaway .38 derringer. I can positively say that if I am ever attacked by a cantaloupe at 75 yards I'm better off running away.

Been a while since I've cut a nice revolver up. This is my current project. It's only roughed out at the moment. Still need to add the front sight and finish it. My plan is to send it off to have it nickel plated and have the screws, hammer and trigger fire blued.

Not custom, and not quite as short as some, but I do carry it concealed from time to time.

Oh, Johnny!

I'm going to have nightmares about that barrel cut, and not that it was a poor job!

The pistol you have in your hand looks very nice and you seem to have done good job on it! The birds-head grip frame and wood look very good!

Your plans sound very good and am looking forward to seeing the finished product, especially the fire-blued parts and how you did those. Your pistol, your choice (obviously!), and I am sure it will turn out well and to your liking, sir.

I just have a come-apart looking at seeing that nice barrel being sawed off. If you had the time to search for and acquire the birds-head grip-frame, methinks you could have found a substitute blued barrel (with a good application of vinegar to de-blue it) to cut down, and sold the original barrel, nice wood, and grip-frame for a good price to re-coup your money. But that is just my take and not my pistol.

No matter, it is your course, and it really does look nice, even at this stage.

Kudos!

Jim

For the life of me, I cannot understand why someone would carry a BP C&B revolver of any type for CC unless that is all you have.

I am not downing your decision. I just can't fathom why.

Sometimes I just want to be different. Besides, if I can't do it with six .44 caliber lead balls, I might just light them on fire and I can slip away in the smoke screen.

I'm curious what kind of performance one gets for a typical 30 grn load with such a short barrel. Anyone see if it burns all of the powder or what kind of velocity can be attained?

I've toyed with the idea of chopping my NMA down and might have if I trusted my abilities and had proper tools. But I've always felt 4" was the proper length for a revolver meant to be handy but accurate enough. Maybe not a belly gun...

I'm surprised one of the makers doesn't offer an AA-44 or AA-36. They have those STUPID "pepperbox" gun based on a '51 Navy frame, but they don't make an Avenging Angel??

Here is my Shorty. I like to keep a conversion cylinder in it. I have done a few of the more popular mod to it, but most recently I did Pettifogger's hand spring replacement. Still needs some smoothing out, but a well worth while mod. 20161102_193132[1].jpg 20161102_193132[1].jpg 20161102_193132[1].jpg
