I want to get a cheap 9 for a beater. I'm trying to decide between a CZ75B or a Ruger KP95. The Ruger is $100 cheaper than the CZ but I don't want to compromise on reliability.

Both are high quality autos, both are extremely reliable. The CZ is worth the extra $100 but both will serve their intended purpose. I have a Ruger KP95 with about 750 problem free rounds through it. It's light, accurate and reliable.

I can't say that the CZ will be certainly more relaible, but I like the ergos, performance, and size of the CZ (not to mention looks) at least $100 more than the Ruger. Look for a used CZ 75 and you'll be out less $.

Used isn't an option for me. There aren't any used CZs in my area and by the time I pay shipping and FFL fees I'm at NIB price. :(

Not a contest. The CZ is a service pistol used all over Eastern Europe, and copied widely.

The P95 is a low cost carry, home defense/plinker gun.

I'll take the CZ by choice first in this contest, every time.

Have you considered the XD9? My local gunshop has a special deal; get the gun, 3 mags and a kydex holster for $423. If I had the money, I'd jump on it.

:(

I don't own a CZ. I do own a Ruger P95 with a stainless slide. In my opinion, for a beater, the finish on the Ruger will hold up better than the finish on the CZ. The Ruger isn't a perfect gun but it is tough and can take abuse.

The CZ is far and away the better gun. I would take one CZ over two Rugers.

I wouldn't qualify the CZ75B as a budget auto--rather as a very good deal.

Both are very reliable handguns but the CZ-75B is by far the better of the two. I would not hesitate to trust my life to one.

When I hear "beater," I think "stainless."
I've had both, and would choose the Ruger, though I would pick the P89 over the P95.

Edit: BTW, Mec-gar hicaps for the Ruger are already available.

The CZ is a fine gun, but for a "beater" I'd get the Ruger. Rugged and reliable as an AK.

Standard cap mags are available for the Ruger, e.g., from CDNN.

I'd get the CZ. (Well, actually, I already did. I have two)

I'd really like to like the Ruger. It's rugged and reliable and surprisingly accurate. But, every time I've fired one I've had a problem with a trigger pull. It's just sooooo long and I have to slightly reposition my hand on the gun to get it to go far enough back for that first DA shot. That rules the gun right out.

Accuracy, Reliabilty, well made

Fairly
Accuracy, Reliability, Well made, fit well mostly all shooters, two letters.

Ps.: Happy new year

Not an exact match, but close:

I bought a Ruger P-94 9mm long ago, before I knew anything about how a pistol should fit one's hand. Although I qualified for my CWL with it, it never felt right. Also, the location/accessibility of its slide-mounted safety is poor IMO.

The biggest problem by far was that regardless of how clean or dirty it was, or what type of ammunition used, it jammed far too frequently to be reliable.

I replaced it with a 9mm all-steel EAA Witness (CZ-75 clone by Tanfoglio) in Wonderfinish. Perfect fit, accurate, and flawless with about 1500 rounds of all types of ammo through it, and in varying states from immaculate to filthy.

I love it more each time I shoot it!

I traded a Ruger P95DC for a CZ-75B several years ago. There was nothing wrong with the Ruger. It worked fine, but the CZ just fit my hand better. Get the one you like. You won't go wrong with either. Good luck.

Last year I sold my Ruger P-95 decocker model with a stainless slide. I sold it because I bought it for my wife and it turned out she shoots her .38 special revolver better. This year I bought a 9mm CZ75 double action only with polymer finish. I bought it because I wanted a high capacity pistol.

The P-95 was 100% reliable out of the box with 115 FMJ, 115 JHP, and +P 124 gr. JHP. Sights were right on at 7 yds. (A Hogue Handall, which is a slip on fingergroove grip, is a nice add-on.)

Out of the box the CZ75 has fired 100 rds. of 115 FMJ and 50 rds. of 124 gr. FMJ without a malfunction. Next time out I will try some +P 124 gr. JHP. Neither shot to point of aim at 7 yds so I wrote CZ and asked them to send a different rear sight.

Both are fine pistols. I chose the CZ because it fits my hand better. Also because, during rapid fire, I can get sights back on target a little faster.

IMO, the ergonomics of the CZ are superior to the Ruger, by far. The one weapon I've seen more trouble out of than anything else....is the Ruger line of autos. I just couldn't recommend them.

I've just picked up a CZ 75B 9mm pistol for duty use and run some tests on it. The only problem I experienced was three nosedives with 147g ammo. The 115g, 124g, and 125g ammunition, both FMJ and JHP, performed perfectly and all of them shot to point of aim at fifty feet. Out of three hundred rounds fired that day, I saw three malfunctions. Those were ammunition/magazine related, and not from the pistol itself.

The only downside to the CZ line is that custom addons are hard to come by. This is not a 1911!!!

Overall, I rate the CZ very highly and give it a 'strong buy' classification. It might be cheap costwise, but it is a great weapon on the whole.

I'd take the CZ over the Ruger. Both are durable and reliable designs, but the CZ has much better ergonomics, and more available un-crippled magazines.
