ok, i, like everyone else have had to put up with the lack of everything expendable that is firearm related. but it has been so long, and so limited, it is really starting to smell like a rotten fish. i know i am not alone, wanting to know what REALLY is going on. in the beginning, panic buying, because it has happened several times before was widely accepted. but this seems like it is lasting way beyond the panic stages. if ammo and components were coming in to retail outlets, and the shelves emptying in a day or so, that would be panic buying. but when nothing shows up for months, it seems to me like something else is at work.

I've been thinking along the same lines for a few weeks now. I have NO idea what is going on, but whatever is happening is past normal production slowdowns.

Does anyone have any decent ideas as to what is happening?

Get out from in front of the computer and look around.

Stores are getting ammo weekly. It goes within the hour at most places, or it's marked way up. There's no conspiracy, there's nothing fishy. It's idiots buying everything, and perpetuating the panic.

I keep seeing this point given in pretty much every thread that mentions the difficulty of finding ammo and I am just not convinced it is true. i have yet to see any proof of this concept at any of the 3 or 4 places I frequent on a very regular basis. Ya know, when I bother to get out from behind my computer that is.

Stores order ammo.
Stores get ammo.
Guy who has camped out for three days to buy all ammo does so.
Next guy sees bare shelves and claims conspiracy on the internet.

If you want ammo, you gotta beat the guy who is more dedicated than you are.

100% agree. People are lined up before the store opens on shipment day at our local big box store

My fiancé was able to buy me a new 15-22 and a 525 round pack of 22 ammo the other day. I see 9mm and 40 at both my walmarts. It's starting to come around. I'm also seeing AR's at near pre panic buying levels. This is in NW GA

.40 handgun ammo was in Bass Pro today, at Sycamore view/I-40. Did not notice any other handgun rounds.
No .22 was seen, but they had .17 .

They had a few types of gunpowder such as IMR 4895 and a fair bit of the higher-priced rifle hunting ammo > .22.

The smell? Yes-without a doubt.
Twice in the last few days from surplus Yugo or Rom. 8mm today in my Y. Mauser, and a little dark residue on the upper bolt area.

There has been a run on things

You can find anything you want on Gunbroker.com and other Internet sites. It is maybe not the price you would like to pay. These are new middle men for the most part, and they order and get in possession of all the product they think they can sell.

I have only heard this, I've never bought anything on Gunbroker.com. In actual fact there seems to be a little of everything coming through, except maybe small pistol primers, have not seen any of those.

I also have not seen .22LR, and believe that has been a pogram since 2008. The last I bought of those did not group very well at all and I wondered about their quality control.

I think you might consider some foreign sources of these products. They will come on the market more as this develops, I've seen a lot of them already.

I wouldn't say it is idiots. I am sure some are, but not all. I think it is because we don't trust our government. I am a reloader and even that stuff is hard to obtain right now.

No conspiracy, just simple mistrust. I think our government deserves not to be trusted. They have heavily regulated firearms that are not to be infringed or taxed. They give $7000 tax returns to families who only paid $1000 in taxes for the year (and it is legal). They implement mandatory health care in a "free" country. And etc etc etc.

Either you aren't looking hard enough or someone is lying to you.

I've found 9mm, .22LR, .223, .45 ACP, powder, primers, bullets, presses, everything there's a panic on, at ALL of my local stores at one time or another, and every single time, there are lines of people calling their friends and families to get there and buy the limit.

The way I look at it, is there are roughly 120 million gun owners in the country with 300+ million guns. Looking at say one caliber, .22lr, my guess would be about 70 million of the guns may be chambered in .22 lr. CCI reports making 4 million rounds per day, which is a lot of ammo, but only ends up being about 2.5 million boxes of ammo every month. If we guess that CCI is 30% of the market for .22lr, that's about 7 million boxes per month (so with our guess of 70 million .22s that's not very many shooters per normal month). If rather than 10% of the .22 owners half of the owners suddenly want a box or worse 3-5 of ammo, the demand greatly exceeds supply, and shortages are likely to continue to for quite some time (as some of the current purchases will go to shooters rather than stockpilers). Something similar is likely true for most centerfire rounds, as well.

The good news is, that unlike other kinds of shortages, new product is constantly added, but because it's in such high demand, the prices heavily encourage speculators to move product from low value owners (big box stores) to high (gunbroker buyers).

A local Walmart usually has a shipment two or three times a week, but there are always a few of the same characters who arrive at 6am and camp out until sporting goods opens to get their 3 box allotment. Some of these "characters" freely admit they buy only to sell at a local flea market or online for triple or more what they pay.

It's those paying $6-10 a brick who are driving this panic. If they were just to cool their jets and wait for couple months before buying, the prices would plummet. Obviously, if no one was willing to buy a $1.50 box of .22LR for $6, then that would not be the asking price.

However, I share your exasperation at the sluggish recovery. This is the worst ammo drought I've ever seen for certain.

Cant beleive another thread on this vein

I am about ready to bypass the General forum and just go to the ones I really enjoy, Revolvers, Reloading and Handguns general.
I usually take a look here first but this type of post is endless! and is driving me away, I suspect I am not the only one that feels this way.
I loved the suggestion to get out and away from the computer. All the local big box stores locally ger cleaned out within minutes of getting shipments in! Some people are making regular rounds of the LGS and cleaning out whatever is on the shelf.
This isn't a conspiracy, its the SHEEP cleaning out the stocks period.

Come on, Lets see some new interesting posts about the hobby in general. Not the endless theories!

One can only hope that at some point the hoarders will run out of money or storage space!

As for me, I am going back to the bench and load up a couple 100 45 Colt

You can say that again

Well ok if you want!
here it is again

:)

Got the 45 colts loaded and will be making a lot of noise over the next couple days. Love that cartridge on the Blackhawk~ I am loading to the Blackhawk higher loadings and really enjoy the recoil. Its not painful to shoot but you sure know you have let go of some of my hot loads. Most times I load with 8.3 grains of Unique behind a 150G RNFP. That load has proved to be extremely accurate in the Blackhawk. The hot loads open up the groups a little but not too much, It might be me flinching just a tad.
Will have to take the wife with me and have her load it, sometimes loading 3 rounds, sometimes 4 or even 5 and 6. The point is you never know when its going to go bang and you feel pretty stupid when you see the muzzle jiggle and all that happened was a CLICK.
Anyway, back to the bench, got some 45 ACP to load up now.

I see no problem. Plenty of 10mm at LGS and no purchase limits. Last time I was there one could choose from five different brands.

LGS here says they only sell .22lr with the purchase of a .22lr firearm...
Every shop here has had bare shelves(for common calibers) for months. Went in to Walmart today, only .22 ammo they had was shotshell for $7.82 a box and Rem .22short for $4.45 a cardboard box. Still limiting each customer to 3 boxes of ammo per day. No 9mm, .38spl, .357, .30-30, .380, .270, .223, .45, .44(anything). Is depressing. I hear they get more every few days and it hits the shelves at 7am, right when I have to be at work...And I can't order anything online because they won't ship to Alaska!!!

This is correct.

People camp out for up to 3-4 hours at the local Wal-Mart any day an ammo shipment is expected. Unless you're one of them, you don't get any ammo.

The terrible supply chain for firearms and ammo strikes again!
I disagree. The supply chain has delivered tremendous amounts of supplies, but (naturally) it is set up for normal to a little above normal demand, and the demand lately has been off the charts. The supply chain is doing a good job all things considered.

Besides, much of the "supply chain" is also delivering everything else people use. The same trucks etc.

There ya go.

Another twist to this is a local gun store owner here that is giving his ammo inventory to a friend that is selling it at high prices on gun broker and denying his customers.

At some point the hoarders will have spent all their money, sold all their guns (ironic isn't it?) and just plain run out of room to hold any more ammo.

This kind of behavior hurts each other (of us). It makes us look like nuts even though we all know that 1000 rounds goes into the berm at a range very quickly (depending on caliber of course). I love it when the media reports on a bust of some kind and reports "the accused had a tremendous stockpile of almost 500 rounds of ammunition" LOL.

So we've got the double stockpile. The obsessive kooks (which I can be about all kinds of things, I'm no saint) and the regular guys who may choose to buy several hundred rounds just so they know they can go shooting this summer.

Frankly, I am planning shooting trips this summer with the express purpose of putting as few rounds down range as possible. Got to zero in some new Tech Sights on a 10/22 and a Scope on a new .243. I will do that with as few rounds as possible. The good news is any time at the range is fun. I think the most fun I ever had at the range was a day 5 or 6 of us went. I bet I didn't fire 40 rounds that day. Couple from this guy's gun, couple from that guy's gun...got to shoot a .300 Wetherby Magnum that day. Sharpened a couple of knives for the fellas...etc.

No conspiracy. It'll die down. When is the question. This Senate defeat will surely help a bit.

When everybody will just RELAX, we will see the end of the drought. Just remember to buy a year or two supply in the future when things have calmed way down. That way you'll be ready for the next drought. Also, fishing helps.
