While thinking about stocking up on 22lr ammo, to be honest it has been a really long time since I have bought any. At least 6 years. I have not really shot many different kinds to compare as they are usually just for plinkin cans and such.

So what do y'all think is the best for the money? I am not talking the match grade stuff just the bulk packs out there.

Please specify the type of you could ie Federal American Eagle, or Winchester SuperX

all my .22's will eat the federal red box loose bulk packs and my cz452 gets the blue box 50 packs. All other brands seem either unreliable, dirty or a combination of both.

I just got a few boxes of Aguila sub sonic .22 ammo (says "sniper" something on the box). Never tried sub-sonics and am intrigued. The bullet is 60 gr. I usually use CCI somethingorother with 40 gr. bullets.

My vote of those listed is Wolf MT is made by SK in Germany. Very good stuff. Last time I bought 500 though it set me back 32 bucks. Bet it's even higher now.

Testing platform - Stock Marlin925 scoped with a Simmons 44MAG 3-10x44.

I have tested gobs of different rounds from CCI (Stinger, Velocitor, Standard Vel, MiniMag), Fed510, PMC (Sidewinder and Moderator), Wincesters (many different names), Remington (several names), and WolfMT.

WolfMT shoots the tightest groups with the most consistency. Typical 7 shots at 50 yards produce groups from 3/4" to 1". PMC Sidewinder shot very well scoring some 3/4" groups. Just didn't have enough of it to get a better feel for it, but would buy more if I see it. Federal 510 can score sub inch groups but suffers frequent consistency issues with me driving. Fed510 can be had in bulk though for less money.

i'm a big fan of federal bulk for the money. i've shot it through s&w 41, ruger 10/22, ruger mk III, marlin 17, and more and its fed reliably with all of them, and had enough power to cycle the action in all of them in my experience.

CCI is definitely better, but it costs more as well. The Remington bulk pack I absolutely hate, and it sucks when the local WalMart is out of Federal and I end up walking out with the remington gold crap

Big Boomer;

It's not what is the best ammo, it's: what's the ammo your gun likes?

Two .22's of the same manufacture & consecutive S/N's are very likely to each shoot better with a different ammo than it's brother. Twenty-two's are notoriously picky about ammo. Doing the requisite amount of ammo testing very possibly can turn a so-so plinker gun into an accurate S.O.B. believe it or not.

One of the biggest mistakes the new Ruger 10/22 owner frequently makes is trashing the stock barrel for a $$ aftermarket tube. Fact is, if the testing is done, I've seen stock 10/22 barrels be outstandingly accurate.

Do the testing, then pick what ammo's best.

CB900F said it right...what your firearm likes.

My firearms have all done well with Remington Thunderbolts for varmint and distance accuracy. It does a nice job hunting ground hogs when taking headshots/neckshots. Whatever you buy, get it buy the case, not the brick. If you do, you will net a better price. Last purchase of a case got me 5,000 rounds of Remington Thunderbolt for $99.00!

My ruger 10/22 will eat the Federal 550 round value pack with almost no hick-ups and pretty good accuracy.

It is the only ammo I buy now.

except for some cb shorts every once-in-a while to lay the hammer down on a squirell

ooops i picked wolf cuz the match is super accurate, but at the last second read " for the $" but too late

for the money i say federal red box bulk pack:)

What no CCI?
I shoot CCI BLAZER, CCI MINI MAG standard & high velocity, REMINGTON THUNDERBOLTS.

I find the best accuracy from the mini-mag 40 grain high velocity.

Yeah - .22's actually work pretty well on zombies - it says so in the Zombie Survival Manual. Because of the low velocity and energy there's little chance of a thru-and-thru. The bullet just ricochettes around inside the skull.

Brand X=Y=Z Is the best!
Follow me on this .
Every firearm seems to have a favorite Load-Hence the fascination with reloading.
You cant mix your own brew of 22 LR ammo so what you have to do is Buy several boxes of everything!!
Set out targets with 8-10 small bulls eyes and fire 5 rnds each brand of ammo and each target -Find the smallest group and thats the flavor your gun likes .
I did this with My rem 541s at 50 yds through a Leupold scope it will plant all into a 1/2 in size group[smaller actually] NOW-heres the clincher Its winchester WILDCAT ammo the cheapest promo stuff they had --I saved the rest of the brick just for this rifle.
At a shooting match at the club we were scoring targets and the guys asked WHY is your rifle so quiet??? I told them I shoot standard velocity ammo as it almost always more accurate.

i get good results with bulk packaged win dynapoints for plinking, though CCI minimags are more powerful, but oddly, the more expensive win super x gives me more FTE's. i guess it's true.....whatever yer gun likes.

There are some more expensive target loads that are slightly better but my vote goes to CCI- Minimags. They cost a little more than the bulk ammo but are nearly as accurate in my guns as the really expensive stuff.

If buying the bulk ammo the Federal has been a little better in my experience.

CCI was left out. It is my choice. However, for cheaper bulk stuff - Federal is fine.

Well, I guess it depends on the gun. Some are more picky than others. However, I have had really good luck with Wolf Match Extra. It's just getting harder to find. I think I'm down to three or four bricks. I have also found that Federal Automatch and the 525 bulk packs to be pretty good. Also Remington Standard Velocity with the light blue stripe on the box.
