I have numerous bulk boxes of .22 LR ammo and I need to pack one box in a bug out bag. Brands of concern are Federal, Winchester, and Remington.

I need to pick a single box and am wondering which of the three are the best. I don't have a load of experience to discern between the three. As of now I am leaning towards Federal.

Thanks in advance.

One box?

For your intended use, I'd buy five 100 rd boxes of CCI Mini-mags, repackaging them if necessary.

It's generally regarded to be the best .22 load and turns unreliable guns into reliable ones.

Why skimp when function would matter most?

If you insist on bulk, I'd get CCI Blazer. Same load, but with an unplated bullet.

Find some CCI Blazer. Hands down best bulk I've tried.

Of the ones listed above I'd try Federal and Winchester and let your gun pick which it likes.

I agree with just investing in some CCI mini-mag ammo for any purpose where you think you may need "serious" .22 ammo.
I zeroed my rifle with it and shooting at 100 yards with open sights, I was able to put 7 out of 10 on a 3" target. I wanted the best accuracy I could get out to that distance for groundhog hunting, but they have also always been reliable in every .22 I've shot them in that was in good working order.
Also, get solids. JHP in a .22 only tears a nasty hole in a small game animal, wasting meat and requiring more cleaning. A solid punches a clean hole where you want it. It will also be more likely to penetrate through something vital if pressed into self defense use against human attackers or something like an aggressive dog.

Remington Thunderbolts are terrible in all respects, Remington Golden Bullets are a little better but still lag behind the others, Federal 36gr. bulk is pretty darn good for bulk ammunition but isn't the most accurate fodder in the world.

IMO your better choices are either Winchester 555 (or 333, the same ammunition in a smaller package) or Federal Champion 40gr. (the 36gr. Champion is the same as their 550rnd bulk, and not nearly as accurate IME) which I have found to be even better, but more difficult to find locally (note that it's packaged in a brick, but priced about the same as bulk).

:)

CCI blazer get my vote as well. I stock piled 12,000rds. This is the only bulk 22 that I have not had trouble with. It seems very consistant.

All that the OP mentioned are serviceable. FOR BULK PURCHASE: I have found Federal to be the best after Shooting Remington for over a decade. Before that I tried Winchester which was OK in older rifles but not so good in newer auto loader pistols.

regards,

:):):)

I like the Wally World Federal bulk of 550. It works perfectly in every gun. CCI has been ok. I haven't shot the CCI enough to really know. The Winchester 333 bulk is good in all guns, except the occasional failure to feed in my M&P15-22. I've had lots of trouble with all remington 22 loads.

I have no problem hitting squirrels at 100yds with a 10/22 using the Federal or Winchester. The Rem isn't bad afa accuracy goes but is nothing but trouble in any semi autos that I have. Took one down the other day at 50 with my Kimber conversion.
I can't ask much more of a 22 in most cases but the constant misfires and ftf/fte take the Rem out of the game for me.
I think I saw Fed on sale at Cabelas the other day for $18 a box, cheap today but it doesn't seem that long ago when a brick was under ten bucks.

The Remington stuff has been almost universally reviled, for years.
The Federal stuff is largely well spoken of, and I like it pretty well, though I get a fair amount of duds and Pffft's.
Like Maverick223, I've also had very good experiences with the Winchester 333/555.
The high-end CCI stuff has always been super-high quality, for me and everyone I know, but somehow I've never even seen the bulk CCI/Blazer stuff. I'll be sure and grab some if I ever cross paths with any.

CCI Blazers IMO are the best bulk pack, but not the cheapest. My 10/22, 22/45 and Marlin 81 dl will pretty much shoot anything though and I really do not see a big difference in accuracy between Federal, Winchester, and Remington.

I've neen using Winchester M22 lately. It's $5 more per 1k but I have had no issues with it. All my picky semiauto pistols eat it up. It's the only bulk I trust at this point. It's a shame I have tens of thousands of various other types. They just aren't getting shot up.

When it comes to bugging out like the OP says, then your concern shouldn't be price as much as the reliability of the ammo. The only problem i have with federal, winchester, remington and others is that they seem to be loaded inconsistantly or sometimes fail to fire. I've shot several thousand cci blazer with no inconsistant loads or failure to fire. Maybe i've just been lucky.

another +1 for CCI Blazer. In my experience, it is the most consistently reliable bulk .22 ammo, and has exhibited more than adequate accuracy. For shooting gophers, I prefer the Winchester Power Points with the nice big hollowpoint. But for reliable bang for the buck, it has to be Blazers. I buy a couple of bricks or bulk packs anytime it goes on sale. No such thing as too much ammo on hand.

Hate to be contrary, but I have had a lot of serious problems with manufacturing defects out of some CCI ammo (granted it was .17s, but it left a bad taste in my mouth), and you can count on their CS dept. to try and weasel their way out of any responsibility. I'll not buy any more CCI/Speer for this reason...and I buy a LOT of rimfire (fortunately Aguila fills just about every role that CCI used to, and are Eley primed, which means they go "pop" extremely reliably).

:)

Another Mini Mag vote here. No, they aren't bulk. But for this use I would never settle for bulk. I'd rather have a couple hundred mini mags than 500+ bulk rounds, if cost is that much of a concern.
