Last night I finally made it the range for the first time in way too long, and I took a buddy who is an avid hunter but his firearm's experience is pretty limited to what he owns. We decided to do rental guns only mostly because we did not want to spend the time to go pick up our guns.

While there we rented 4 guns

Springfield XD .40 w/ 4in Barrell

S/W .357 (Dont honestly remember the model)

Kahr K9 9mm

Ruger Mark II .22lr

All of these guns shot pretty well, but I was really unhappy with the Kahr due to the smaller grip size and rather abusive recoil for a 9mm.

This spurred a conversation about rental guns and guns that we would gladly rent often but never purchase. As for me I am going to be purchasing an XD very soon but of those 4 thats about the only one of them that I would purchase. I also rent the Ruger SRH Alaskan on 454c often because its a hoot to shoot and a gun that will certainly check the ego of just about anyone.

So whats your favorite gun to rent that you dont own and dont plan to buy?

H&K MP40. Belongs to the department, but the Chief brings it to CCW classes occasionally. Shhhhwweeeeet. :D :D

Whoops, I am informed that the correct designation is MP5/40.

m242 Bushmaster 25mm chain gun! i kinda borrowed it form the army long enough to shoot gunnery tabke 8 does that count?

back on topic, the best gun i have ever borrowed would be a para c 7.45 companion of my dad's that he no longer has, i was gonna buy it but he sold it for a beretta cx4 storm.:banghead: the storms are nice but not that nice, i tell you what he should have done he should have sold one of those darn glocks he has, who needs 3 glocks in 9mm?

i can't believe that you had an issue with the kahr's recoil, but that is good because you are gonna do the right thing and buy an xd! the planets are in alinment. HAHAHAhahahahah, my dream of converting everyone to xdism is comming!

btw great choice it will serve you well.

Oh boy, where to start. First gun we "borrowed" was an SKS. We had inherited a couple of .22's from my wife's dad and the guy next to us at the range had an SKS so I asked if my wife could shoot it. She really liked it a lot, so I found a pretty good deal and bought a Yugo.

Then she rented the .500AE Deset Eagle. Didn't like it very much, it was dirty and was not accurate and jammed a lot. We borrowed a friends AR-15, Mini-14, .54 Cal muzzleloader, Thompson Contender (.223). So the first favorite was the TC so I got a really good deal on a 30/30 Contender for my wife. She also loved the AR-15, but I liked the Mini-14 so I found one and bought it for me.

Then a friend rented a S&W .460 which instantly became my wife's favorite gun. Big muzzle blast and accurate! He later rented the S&W .500 which my wife was not too keen on. Not enough blast compared to the .460 and not as accurate. So Christmas rolls around and we got a good deal on a Stag Arms lefty AR-15 for her. The gun buying bug bit her and she went right down the street and got her .460. We also got a .54 cal muzzleloader kit for Christmas from the folks. Typically she shoots 3 boxes of ammo with the .460 per range visit (once a week!) so I absolutely HAD to get a reloading outfit! And there you have it!

P.S. Does anyone have a 600 or 700 Nitro Express? My wife saw a video of one and would give you my right nut to shoot one just once!

SIG 226

always wanted one, rented one a few times, now want one more but I always seem to buy something else.

Not "best" gun but certainly most fun...

HK MP5 :D

There is an annual fund raising campaign around town for St Jude Hospital. Can't remember the group's name but they bring a dozen or more full-autos to one of the indoor ranges in the area. It $20 to fire a 25-round magazine!

Weatherby Mark V custom with laser-carved hunting scene on a fancy walnut stock, .300 Wby Mag. Real-man's plinking at soda bottles a half-mile away.

Ruger Gold Label SxS shotgun. If I ever have $2K to blow and can find one, I really liked the thing.

S&W Model 41 .22 semiauto pistol. Sublime. Rich man's plinker.

Colt 1991. Simple, perfect.

Super Redhawk in .480 Ruger. If I ever actually have a use for one...:)

Old Winchester 94 in new condition. Hunting buddy's gun. Perfect little brush gun, perfect mechanicals. I think it's been a long while since they made the base model like that.

Remington 870 Competition. Has an active gas-operated recoil-reduction system. Neat. Hasn't been made for years.

Hi-point.

It held all the papers on my desk perfectly, even when there was a noticable breeze.

Ruger Blackhawk in .44. Not fancy, expensive, or unusual, but as they say in The Three Amigos, it is a man's gun :D. I'd never fired a SA revolver before, and it was a hoot.

I also really liked a kimber .38 Super I rented once upon a time.

Desert Eagle .50

I don't know if it was the best, but it was the most surprising. It was much better made than I would have guessed.

Recoil wasn't really that bad, but the one we rented ejected .50 caliber brass cases square in your forehead. One case actually drew blood from one person in our group.

H&K MP5 PDW with silencer. Got about an hour of rock n' roll goodness in before I had to share with its owner.

He promised to let me shoot his 1919 Browning next chance he gets to take it out...on the condition that I help load the belts.

Short of more or less un-realistic guns that I have shot (MP5 comes to mind), I would have to say the Ed Brown Kobra is about spectaculer. Would love to own one and I am not what you'd call a 1911 guy.

The coolest and, as far as I can remember, the only gun I've ever rented was an MP5. I had a smile on my face the rest of the week, aside from when I had to give it back.

Now, if I can just find a place that will let me rent a Ma Deuce.
