A friend of mine showed up with a N.I.B. Beta C mag for an AR. I'm kinda inspecting it as I key in this thread. He picked it up for cheap but has decided not to fool with it. I remember back during the ban these things went for over a grand. Just wondering should I relieve him of this because it's a legit thing every armchair commando should have or its it overhyped junk? Might be cool for melting the barrels down on some of my right of the chart AR's.:)

Some folks like them. I find them unwieldy and heavy, and don't like using them much.

I'm not a fan, but to each their own. The only reason I could see using one was during a sustained defensive operation where you needed to lay down suppressive fire for extended periods. I don't think I'll ever be in one.

I would hate to have one. Mostly due to the rapid rate it would suck money out of my wallet to keep feeding it ammunition.

Nor do I. I also wonder how well the handguards and barrel would fare, if I had to shoot that many rounds without having so much as a three to five second break to swap mags. :)

Absolutely. If nothing else, folks do seem to think that they're a fun novelty at the range.

I have further inspected it and it's not a Beta C but a Korean knock off. It seems to be well made and a scan of internet forums suggests the Koreans did a good job copying this product.

Seems to me kinda like my Saiga-12 drum. It's great for shock value, and for impressing buddies when we get together, but it's too unwieldy for anything serious.

Are the beta-C's reliable enough to keep up with a full auto M-16?

Tactifool, more like.

If you had an automatic, that would be one thing.

But 100 rounds of 5.56 sticking out on both sides, making it hard to grip and pretty heavy?

Pass.

I have a Beta C mag and I got it because I still could [and it looks cool, the price was right and it gets alot of looks]. If I were you I would try to get a 'real' one. Not a knock off. Watch your rate of fire. My barrel was smoking at about 1rd. per sec.or two.
