Blanks for a 21 Gun Salute

here is a 30-06 blank. we single load three rounds for our (American legion post #79, Yarnell, az) honor guard salute. the round must be loaded flush with the breech end of the en bloc clip. this round wasnt and crushed the mouth as it fed a bit low.

Those are the GI blanks we used in WW1 & WW2 reenacting, back in the day. They are hard to find today, unless you have access through some veterans' group, etc.

That round -- with the roll crimp and red seal wad -- is loaded with EC [Explosives Company] Blank Fire Powder. You have to be careful with this stuff, and never load it behind any sort of bullet. EC Blank Fire Powder was used as the filler in about half the Mk. 2 fragmentation grenades in WW2 (the other half used TNT). If you use it in a bulleted cartridge, it will blow up your gun for sure.

There was an entirely different kind of GI blank -- with a star crimp -- that was used for launching rifle grenades. You have to be careful with those too.

we have the crimp style, too. thanks for the warning on the ecbfp.

on another note: we clean the powder residue out of and off of the guns after every firing (no matter how many rounds fired). the guns carbon-foul terribly even after only one shot and quickly plug the gas vent hole which degrades the op rod action leading to cartridge cycling issues.

Grenade-launching blanks should never be used with a blank firing attachment. They could blow the BFA right off the barrel.

I suppose they would be OK with bolt action rifles, with no bore restrictors.

There are commercial or hand loaded blanks with star crimps. Those should not be confused with the GI grenade-launching blanks. Make sure you know what you have.

thx again. the crimped blanks we have are painted white on the crimp. a Google search to check will give me something to do today.

Maybe it's the angle of the OP's pic, but I have 7 blanks that were fired at my uncles Air Force funeral years ago.

The pic is took next to a live 7.62x51 round

My picture has a 300 Savage in it because I don't have any 7.62x51 on hand.
