Guys, have you ever witnessed something like this? I was shooting my S&W 460 off of a tripod, topped with the BOG Shooting Rest. I have modified the item, by adding some leather padding.

I started shooting some 45 Colt loads, (HOT 26.1 GR. H-110, 250 GR. Deep Curl Bullets), 30 rounds.

I then switched to the 460 rounds. Factory Hornady 200 GR. SST's. After 5 rounds were fired, half of the BOG shooting rest, went down range.

Pictures of how the 460 is rested on frame and aftermath of the BOG Rest.

I always worry about the gap spitting lead as well. Keep them finners away from the front O that cylinder!!!
I have a HandiRifle in 500 S&W and that wasted energy all gets used to great benefit as opposed to my revolver. I always wondered how much actual energy is wasted in that cylinder gap.

Cylinder gap does not cost as much as you would think. Typically its only ~50 fps. A propper/typical ~0.006 gap generates a fully choked flow through it, greatly limiting gas loses. The guys that did ballistics by the inch did an interesting study on the effects of cylinder gap.

Sheeesh! Thanks for showing that. Talk about caution and a good lesson on how to properly hold a revolver. I'm not sure my Model 29 or Super Blackhawk would generate that much pressure.

I'm thinking fondly at my middle of the road cast bullet loads in 32 long and 38 special wadcutters. :D

Should post a pic from the right side or front/rear too.

I didn't realize the yoke was busted off until the 3rd pic.

Thanks for showing, that's crazy.

Been several leather sand-bags and shooting bench tops destroyed by my .460. Welder's leather and duct tape cured a lot of those ills. Fortunately, I have a metal "V" on my shooting tripod.

Sorry to hear about your problem. Glad to know that you are safe. However, not real surprised. Bog shooting rest @ $70.00, Ransom Master Series @ $445.00.

Seem to recall Myth Busters cut a chicken leg in half with blast from the Cylinder gap. Can't remember if it was a .460 or .500
Don't think you would want t a finger there!

Yes, I have a spare one, it is on the pictures posted. I have blown out sand bags shooting the 460, but thought the BOG yoke would stand up for the task. Lesson learned and back to the drawing boards.
Ya mean like holding the revolver one- handed Olympic style? I shot a 500 mag X frame belonging to another shooter at the WMA range a couple years ago. He was convinced the guns were not made to be fired unrested. Honestly it was so heavy the recoil wasn't terrible shooting 2-handed isosceles style. With the weight of the gun kind of wanted a heavier trigger pull. Very loud even with muffs on. I'll stick with my little 44 mags

The cylinder gap / flame cutting on a .357 Maggie can be painful. A .44 Maggie ....... well it‘ll learn ya. On a .460 or .500 magnum it’s a torch and dangerous as all get out.

I shoot lots of guns. One thing I have to constantly tell myself or others with a revolver is “thumbs forward bad....fire bad.” :)

I've blown out two bags with my 460 as well. I haven't tried the 460 on my sticks yet; does that leather padding help or was that your setup when the yoke blew out? I have shot my 44Mag on the sticks and it survived just fine...the 460 however, is a horse of a different color.

Choked flow... fluid dynamics... ugh
Yep I said those evil words. Fluid dynamics {shudder} one of those dark side classes they use to torture those undergrads on the noble path to the light side of mechanical engineering, solid mechanic and dynamics.

I added the leather padding to both yokes. The hard rubber on the yoke, caused the revolver to slide or cant. The leather (old tongues from boat shoes) gave a better seating. I have shot my Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter 44 Mag using this yoke, without any problems.
