Hey Guys and Gals,

I'm a newbie in these parts, so I should introduce myself. My name's Steve (for those of you who who would rather not use 'handles'), I'm stuck in California, and I'm a brand spankin' new Sig owner (229 in .357SIG).

Does anybody have a range report, or advice for me? I've already picked 'stuff' out. She'll wear a Hogue grip with fingergrooves, and straight-eights. I considered a whiz-bang lasermax rod or ct grip for about 3 seconds before concluding they're much more 'whiz' than 'bang' (no offense to the laser advocates out there, just not my speed; besides, I need ammo money).

So, did I do good? Please don't ask what I paid, or tell me what you paid. My wallet is still bleeding after 24 hours... ;)

Thanks in advance for your replies. Good to be here.

P.S. If anyone has got a 229 with the Hogues on it, could you do me the honor of a picture? Pretty please??

Sigs are great guns, mine is a 228 with standard grips, but I dug up this pic of a 229 with hogues......tom

Hey Steve, welcome to the club :D I ,too,am a Steve stuck here in California,AND also just got my first Sig(239) just 2 weeks ago :neener: maybe we should start a club or something.I suppose next your going to say you're turn'in 50 in October ;) ,if you are,we need to both get out an get a lottery ticket or something

And That was my 200th post :what: Whoooooooa

Welcome to the Cult of SIG. I've carried my 229/357sig for about 4 years now. I've got a pair of Hogues on it- non finger groove style- the factory line sights, and nothing out of the ordinary done to it other than my own hands inside the action for a little tuning.

These things are scarily accurate as they are. One thing about adding a laser- if you're shooting it in an indoor range or any confined space with little breeze to dissipate the burned powder, it's possible that the only advantageous shot you get using the laser is the first one. When I took my CHL class, the guy in the lane next to me was using a nice Kimber with a LaserMax. On the second and third shot of the string, the laser backscatter from the combustion byproducts made the laser superfluous. Made it tough for everyone else there, too- trying to shoot through a neon fog in their peripheral vision.

You'd be better served with night sights and a good hand held high intensity light than a laser, in my opinion.

Welcome to THR. New guy buys the ammo and cleans all the firearms, you know :D

Regards,
Rabbit.

Very cool, thanks for the warm welcome guys.

Steve, I turn 30 in June. Hold onto that lottery money, man :)

Love the pics! Mine is basic black, should look pretty sharp with the hogues on there. Does the finish hold up well?

BTW, none of the local or municipal PD's around here authorize .357SIG for duty. So, no cheap (or free, depends who I'm with) bulk ammo to burn through for me... This makes my already bleeding wallet cringe in fear! Any ideas on a good source for ammo (online or otherwise)??

Thanks again!

BTW, Rabbit, I totally agree with your advice on the laser. It wasn't much of a consideration to begin with. My Heinies are plenty dangerous all by themselves. Oh, and I already have SWEET flashlight :D

Welcome, and congrats on a fine purchase. 229 is my favorite grip size of any double stack pistol. I'm sure you'll love it.

Any ideas on a good source for ammo (online or otherwise)??

1) Comparison shop your local stores and the internet (consider shipping). Find the lowest vendor, then ask how much he can knock off if you buy rounds by the thousand.

2) Take up reloading.

Steve, congratulations and welcome to THR! Have fun at the range with your first pistol. Remember to take care of your piece and it will take care of you.

A friend of mine is selling his sig (not sure which exact one), he's selling the gun itself which is in .40SW, a barrel for .357Sig, and a crap load of magazines...
What he wants for it is a good deal, but I just can't afford it right now.
Wah!
Congrats on your purchase and your new membership.
It's a mighty fine gun. =)

Yep, save that money on the laser deal and get a .40 barrel for less than half the price (Cheaper Than Dirt usually has them for around $150). No change is required of anything else (recoil spring, mags, etc.) -- just the barrel. Pretty slick...especially when the cost of .357Sig ammo starts to add up.

'Course, having said that, I have a .40 barrel for my P229 .357Sig, and have only used it a couple of times -- .357Sig is just too damn fun! But it's good in theory...if not in practice. ;)

Thanks for the input, all.

To clarify, this isn't my first pistol, it's my first Sig.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to time travel ten days into the future...

I love them

I have 4 of them I like them so much. they will shoot about 2 inch groups at 25 yards with good ammo.

Sneaky - welcome dude! :)

Can't sport a 229 but am like you a new SIG Club member, with my 226ST. I have night sights on that but also added CT grips - which find nothing short of phenomenal. For my old eyes in low light they are the dog's dangly thingies! :).

I have had about every other darned gun for ages but - thinking ahead to the new IDPA season went for the 226 .. mine is ''only'' 9mm but that keeps costs down, and, with a 17 round mag makes for some useful ''invenory'' on board. In fact it is taking over as carry piece right now. It has a great ''feel'' ... just sits right, and mega accurate.

I carried my 229 for about 2 years both on and off duty. I believe Sig is the best double action auto made. You should have a great time with this.

The SIG P229 in .357SIG is the best personal defense gun and ammo combination money can buy. You made an excellent choice.

Wow, the pics are just killing me! P95Carry, that is one SWEEET setup. I leaned in the direction of 9mm until I got to shoot a .357SIG in the 229 frame. Love at first blast!! :p

What's the word on the finish? Tough enough??

Finish? Well, on the ST pretty much indestructible! I have noticed some slight polishing/dulling effect around muzzle area - the effect of in and out of rig type deal ... what I am using currently is not best of fits, meaning rather tight at base ... probably ease over time. No biggie at all.

I have considered the .357 SIG many, many times ... but due to the IDPA aspect, and the fact that I really just do not want (yet) another caliber - I stuck with dear ol' 9mm Para!!

Could be tempted tho - way too easy! :)

WELL, seeing as you don't have a 229 yet, AND since the 226 is a tad big for concealed carry... perhaps a new purchase is in order?? :D
