A buddy of mine had me come look at his mom's window, which had a 9mm round shot thru it. The round went thru a double pane window at about 60" from the ground in front of the window, then thru a wall but about 9" higher than the window, and then thru the cabinet behind the wall. To me with that trajectory it appeared to be a drive by from someone firing up at the window. I haven't tried the double pane window test yet to check for deflection patterns, so does anyone think a round fired straight at double pane glass could deflect that high up into the wall?

Did they call the police? Perhaps they might figure it out. I am not sure how much effort they might put into trying to figure out the trajectory but one never knows. Also, if this is some bonehead running around randomly shooting any evidence they gather might help in tracking them down. Perhaps neighbors have video cameras. Maybe red light cameras might help. Possible witnesses, etc.

You bet. Tiny twigs deflect 405 gr .45/70 rounds in unpredictable ways, the glass panes of a window sure will send the 9mm bullet at odd angles when they’re struck.

Do you think she lives in a drive by prone area or was this a random act of some lone idiot?

Stay safe.
Very bad area, lots of violence in the Louisville KY area. There was a shoot out the day it happened.

Police was called for sure, once they discovered the bullet hole. Don't expect much out of them, Louisville is having a hard time covering up the thug mentality like they used to.

Hold a lazer pointer where it hit the wall and point it on the last hole it went through before the wall. If it goes through the middle of the NEXT hole then it didn't "deflect" very much.

That’ll work well.

We will also use 3’ thin metal rods to show penetration directions through car bodies and walls, etc.

Stay safe.

Thats scary! I'm glad your friends Mom was not injured. My limited testing, most just messing around, showed that the 9mm penetrates really well.

What a frightening environment to have to live in. Kind of like living over a bar in the "wild west". My heart goes out to your friends Mother for enduring such a situation.
It took a few shots through her 4th floor walk up apartment window to get my grandmother to leave her really bad Bronx neighborhood for a lesser bad Bronx neighborhood. lol

Bolling AFB housing in Anacostia, MD, now I suppose called Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, has General Officer housing along the western wall of the base.

In the late 1990's, sitting in on the USAF Chief of Staff's (CSAF) daily briefing, with about a dozen General Officer's sitting around the table, waiting for the CSAF to arrive, the discussion came around to gunfire near the base the night before. A couple of the Generals that live in the housing area, commented it is so frequent, that they and their wife, had gotten into the habit of rolling off the bed and onto the floor when they heard gunshots. There was some discussion about installing bullet proof windows, but the determination was it wasn't cost effective.

Wasn't cost effective? That's our government for you. But they wouldn't hesitate to send millions to Bangladesh for transgender studies.

Back 40 years ago I lived (and worked) in a 'gritty' section of Oklahoma City. Gunfire was a regular thing, mostly occuring in the evening and night time hours.
I remember once I was working in the section of the shop that fronted a busy 4 lane. I saw a car pull over across the road, then heard 4 gunshots. I heard 3 hits on the building.

I didn't even bother going out and looking for the bullet holes. I just figured somebody that worked here was messing with the wrong girl, or something else that was not quite above-board.

No big deal. If they can't even hit a 2-story building 4 out of 4 times from across the road, I wasn't worried.

That bullet could have come from quite a distance. A few years ago my wife was out in the yard when she heard something coming through the trees and it struck the ground near her. She came and got me and I suspected a bullet fired from some distance away even though she heard nothing. We looked and found nothing.

The next day some neighbors told us they heard something hit their metal storage building and found what appears to be a 40 caliber bullet hole in the roof. No bullet could be found. The door to their building was open and judging from the angle of the hole the bullet should have gone out the door and into their yard. After comparing notes it happened at the same time the previous day.

Someone, somewhere fired at least 2 shots into the air.
