Last I checked the introduction of optics hasn't produced a whole new level of scoring or a crowded field of High Masters.

The point isn't that better scores have been tabulated; it's that it's much easier to get them with optics instead of irons. Why else would competitors pay lots of more money for glass if they could just as easily get just as good scores with much cheaper sights? I've competed in Bullseye events since the early sixties and know that shooters who really mean to win are using optics; damn near all of them and for good reasons. Just visit the firing line at any major Precision Pistol match to verify the evidence of same.

True. Remember, though, that these are competitions and in order to keep the playing field level dots get used....and that is what it has done.
Herschel Anderson's 2680 aggregate national record has stood the test of time. He shot it in 1974. I do not know if he shot it with irons. The previous record 2678 (2674?) by Bill Blankenship was done with irons.
I do not seeany more High Masters than there has been before now.
I have a teammate who shoots irons exclusively. He won the .45 championship at Camp Perry last year

Several years ago when shooting at Camp Perry, I met Mr. Blankenship and secured his autograph, which I treasure more than Pete Rose's-and I'm a lifelong Redlegs fan.

I've never used any sights other than irons on my handguns when competing in Bullseye matches-but that's not the reason I don't win much anymore. :( ;)
