You think the Smart Gun Law in Jersey is S**T, look at this stupid bill!
SB489: The Further Deterioration of the 2nd Amendment
by Jennifer Freeman
The California legislature is well on its way to passing SB489. If enacted into law, SB489 would deem "unsafe" any semi-automatic handgun that does not have a "loaded chamber" indicator and "magazine disconnect" feature on it. That covers basically every semi-automatic handgun in existence today.
One might infer that the intent of this bill is to prevent "accidental shootings" from occuring by handlers of semi-automatic handguns who claim that they thought the firearm was unloaded.
Keep in mind that in order for such "accidental shootings" to occur, three things have to happen. 1) The firearm must be loaded. 2) The operator of the firearm must point it at a person. 3) The operator of the firearm must pull the trigger.
Any person who breaks all three of the basic safety rules -- 1) Treat every firearm as if it were loaded; 2) Always keep your firearm pointed in the safest possible direction; 3) Do not put your finger on the trigger until ready to shoot; -- is unsafe. Repeat. Any PERSON who fails to follow the three basic rules of firearm safety is unsafe.
And yet, our government would have you believe that it is the firearm that is unsafe.
In doing so, the government is taking away personal responsibility for ones' actions and shifting the blame on an inanimate object. An inanimate object that represents one of the most sacred rights we have -- the right to self defense.
The semi-automatic handgun has been available in its current form for approximately one hundred years. As such, this type of handgun has been owned and operated by thousands, perhaps millions, of responsible, law-abiding people. People who hold a high regard for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
And yet, in these modern -- progressive -- times, our government is seeking to deem these symbols of liberty and self-determination as unsafe.
Shifting blame, refusing to accept accountability, and creating new, useless laws are concepts that politicians understand very well. This should come as no surprise since we keep electing them. We need to make a determination, however, as to how far we are willing to let politicians trample on our rights.
If we allow SB489 to pass, we are telling our government that we cannot responsibly handle our own semi-automatic handguns. If that is the case, could the government also determine that we cannot responsibly handle any firearm? That we cannot responsibly handle any self-defense situation? Can we even be trusted to vote responsibly?
Americans have suffered enough from the "good intentions" of gun control. It's time for our government to stop this progressive deterioration of our Second Amendment rights and leave it to Americans to behave responsibly as we have done for hundreds of years.
SB489 passed the California Senate and could be heard in the Assembly any day. If it passes the Assembly, it goes to the Governor's desk to be signed into law or vetoed. Click here to contact your Assembly Member.
