So I'm starting to feel the vortex of California pulling me that way in regards to career advancement. There are several jobs there that I'm interested in and my daughter is in the San Diego area. My problem is, I live in a gun loving state known as Arizona and have several EBR's, to include a suppressed .300 Blackout, bunch of 30 round mags for the EBR's and AK's. As much as I'd hate to give them up, it may become a reality.

So my question is, outside of the 30 round mags, can I take the suppressor into Cali or is it verbotten?

I guess I can brush up on the legal laws of that state, but I thought while I'm doing that, i'd solicit insight from my fellow THR members...

Thanks in advance.

Do you have other options? I don't have any answers, just more questions to ponder on.

Is your daughter planning to move someday to another state?
Would she move to another state?
What about the both of you moving to another state?
What other states have jobs that you are interested in?

Is your daughter planning to move someday to another state? < she moved there last year and loves it. I visited her 2 weeks ago and, although I was surrounded by liberals, I enjoyed the area.

Would she move to another state? <probably not. She really likes it there.

What about the both of you moving to another state? < I don't mind it here, but in order for me to progress in my career I have a choice of California, Maryland or DC.....all of which I'd rather stay away from. I am holding out for something better but only time will tell. I'm secure here where I work now but there is no room for advancement for either myself or my girlfriend (Quality Inspector)

What other states have jobs that you are interested in? <see above. Just thinking of the cons of moving to Cali, which I know plenty of, but am weighing my options.

Suppressors and any rifle that can accept a detachable magazine and have a pistol grip a big fat felony. Plus a million other things.

Your best bet if you must move, is to leave them in AZ. You can come and visit them on holiday.

Interesting question, California.

To those outside the state it seems to be absolute hell for gun owners.

The truth is far more complex.

To start with, there are so many good places to shoot that it boggles the mind. Where I work in the Mojave, just an hour and a half north of LA, I can pull off on any side road in the desert, set up a .338 Lapua, and shoot at 1000 yards almost anyplace I like. The Sheriff in ourr county is decidedly pro-RKBA and signs CCW's with a smile. Life is good.

You don't get to shoot un-neutered AR's, no full autos, and no suppressors. And 1000 other nibbles at your ankles by annoying regulations. Want full autos and suppressors? Base your trust in Arizona, rent a storage spot, and take a drive now and then. Lake Havasu City is a pretty nice weekend shooting destination.

Compared to NJ where I lived for decades, California is excellent.

Compared to Wisconsin, where I live now: The laws are more numerous, but it's actually a better place in my mind to actually enjoy shooting, as you can actually find a place to go and *shoot*, where back home... good luck finding a spot not on a formal range, unless you buy a farm and have your own 40 acres.

Plusses and minuses. You need to do your own math.

There isn't enough money in the world to get me to move back to what is rapidly becoming a 3rd world.....

Absolutely true.

For decades I've thought of Cali as hell for shooters. I never would have chosen to live there because of my perceptions about it. As a military member, I've had the opportunity to live all over the country (and the world), and have experienced some differences in state-to-state and region-to-region social and practical views on firearms. California, however, I always thought of as the one place I'd never want to go.

My Uncle, however, had different plans and sent me to the Golden State.

Turns out, it is a surprising place that doesn't really fit exactly in to the stereotype or the perspective I had from living outside of it.

In the part of the state I live, there is a vibrant and active shooting culture, lots of firearms owners, and more gun stores and indoor ranges than I've seen in any other state in the nation I've ever lived in. As previously mentioned, there are many public and private outdoor places to shoot, and the weather is nice enough for a lot of the year that you can actually go shoot at them.

Yes, the regulations are burdensome and impact many aspects of firearms ownership...but for the shooter, it isn't the end of the world. I've had to sell some of my firearms before coming here, and I haven't been able to enjoy some of the types that I used to when I lived elsewhere...but I've also rediscovered rifles and handguns that have been languishing in the back of my safe for years, and rediscovered how fun they are to use.

The way I look at it is, if I "have to" live in California, I may as well try and be one of the folks trying to offset the hysterical gun control folks who (from the outside) seem to have over-run the state.

High taxes and a generally higher cost of living to me means some research as to whether or not a higher salary is actually more disposable income.

Income tax, gasoline tax (a percentage, not a flat rate), rent, utilities...

Shooting and gun types are just part of the game.

This. Cost of living in California is ridiculous.

Do yourself a big favor and don't go. I lived there for fifty years and finally had enough about two years ago. Moved to F.A. and couldn't be happier. Find a different employment option. Convince the family to get out while the getting is possible. That place just gets dumber every day.

I refuse to step foot in that state. I currently live in VA and was thinking about moving to AZ, the only other gun loving state that I wouldn't mind living in...

I wouldn't do it.

Interesting contrast:

It's funny that from a distant perspective when all you do is to read about it, it seems like a place not to go to, and once there it seems like a great place. It may as well be it's own country, and in that context you just need to go with the flow. The DOD is my reason for being there, it wasn't my own choice, but I am extremely grateful to have the experience. Flying fighters over the Mojave on Friday, driving to San Pedro to board a scuba diving boat Friday night, diving Catalina Saturday and then heading back to the base, and then driving up to Yosimite and to see the big trees on Sunday, with a little walk in the desert to shoot rifles and pistols thrown in on the way for good measure is a typical weekend for me there. Not a bad spot. Stay out of the cities and enjoy the other 98% of the place. Heck, that's true anyplace.

Cost of living in CA can vary widely and is no worse than other major cities. Career development sounds a lot like not only a raise but the chance to also move up in your field, so factor that in to your choice. The weather is great, the politics suck, and there is more to life than the lack to own certain guns.
Good luck!

Yea I'm betting it's a great place, for all the reasons you mentioned, but I'm strictly speaking from the perspective of a gun and knife owner and carrier who does not to deal with all of their crazy overreaching laws.

Why would anyone want to surround themselves with people stupid enough to keep electing those politicians? Or with such poor morals and values? Just for some scenery?

Just say no!

14 years ago I moved from Idaho to Nevada, 9 years ago I moved from Nevada to California, five years ago I moved from California to Arizona; climbing the career ladder.
I would move back to Nevada or Idaho and I will never move back to California: the complicated gun laws, high taxes and high cost of living made it unbearable for me.
If I quit shooting guns today and sold them all tomorrow, I still would not move back to California.
Good luck with your decision.

Every county is different. Kern County borders LA County. Essentially shall-issue versus restricted may issue. It all depends on the Sherriff. With the recent court decision regarding San Diego, CCW issuance is getting sorted out in formerly essentially no-issue areas. Me? I'm happy to be in Kern County.

California might as well be ten different states depending on where you are.

The wife and I are both born in CA; Orange and Tuolumne counties. We left California back in 1978 for Oregon. After a couple of years went to Arizona then to Nevada.

We're only a few years from retiring and my wife inherited her grandmother's house uphill from Twain Harte. She sold it -- we won't even consider moving back to CA.

AZ and NV are both great choices for retirement. OR isn't a great choice but I'd head back there before even considering CA.
