It mounts on the rail underneath a pistol barrel and let's you mount topside optics.

Second what West Kentucky said. My H&K USP came with a similar rail clamped on to the "light rail" of the frame to mount an AimPoint sight on top.

Hanes makes mine ....its mostly a range toy, no ccw here in hawaii lol....but i have found, atleast with mine, that it returns to poa when removed and re attached.

And ignore the light i was putting as much stuff on it as i could irritate a friend of mine.... actually took the dot off and stuck my simmons whitetail classic on there, and asked him how im supposed to shoot it at 300 with the bell infront of the muzzle.....

I'm sure you guys are right! but it looked to me at first glance a rail to mount to an 870 shotgun receiver to put a scope, red dot etc. No?

Not for a shotgun, because the dovetail on the inside, on the shorter rail, is to mount the unit to an existing underside rail. This gives you a mount on top for optics, while retaining a (lower) underside rail for a light or laser.

I got it today and it has already found its new home. Thank you so much ZBill. Now I need to dig out an appropriate sight to try it out with.

Id suggest the lightest sight u have, i put a larger red dot on mine and it made the gun quite top heavy
