Love my Colt Commanders in .45 but I would opt for a 9mm. for CCW. Slightly smaller, more compact platform along with less recoil and more rounds and less expensive ammo.

I'm old and lately I've been carrying 9mm more and more. Glock 19 with 15+1 rounds is hard to beat. I do still carry a .45 sometimes out of nostalgia.

I went 9mm because my Glock 19 fits my hand, carries easy, and points great for me. I do not like the way the 45 glock (g30 I think?) in that size fits or points.

IF I had a 45 that felt like the G19 or dang close I would probably consider it. I think Glock makes a 45 GAP in a frame size very similar to the g19 though... Not overly concerned on caliber. I have gold dots or HSTs in the mag, so I think they would do what they are supposed to do.

I voted 9mm. In testing that I've done through jugs, and wet newspaper w. denim in front, a 9mm 124 gr. xtp opens up just as well and penetrates just as deep as one from a .357 magnum. That was good enough for me.

Doesn't matter.

1) I am a Bona fide old fart.
2) I recommend everyone use what ever you like, it's your life, family, property at risk, not mine.
3) 10 times I had to go to my secondary weapon, my sidearm, in military combat in Vietnam. 7 times it was an issue 1911A1 and three times it was a Victory model S&W.
4). Like many here have stated, accuracy was consistantly the second most important issue, after the first three, reliability, reliability, and reliability. (we are lucky that today we have so many high quality fighting sidearms to choose from.)
5). As you can see, MIND SET, SKILLSET, TOOLSET in THAT order is what you must take into the fight and of course apply your OODA loops. Thanks to Col. John Boyd.
6). Ability to maintain your weapons, cleaning a weapon is much more than just getting the carbon fouling off/out. ( hint, at one time I was a DI)

For the record, I most often CCW/EDC my custom Colt LtWgt Commander or usually one of my Colt Commanders these days. I prefer a Government Model, but age and disease have taken their toll.

I do carry 9mms either a HK P 30 or most often lately one of my Walther PPQ's (until you have shot one don't talk to me about any stock trigger except a 1911.)

When I will be driving outside the metro city area (Phoenix). Particularly when going closer to the Mexican Border. There is a higher potential for a larger number of miscreants. I will have long arms in the vehicle too, but ability to access them in most probable scenarios is not a high potential. Makes me feel better more than anything.

9, or 45. As always this ain't about the arrow, it's about the Injun. Remember, it is a poor workman who blames his tools, even in a firefight.

Go figure

My past 4 pistols....2 9's 2 45's

I carry a 9 with either 7 or 8 in the magazine.

9mm and .40 for me, but only because I'm too handsome and debonair to shoot a .45.

IMO no one has made a true .45 ACP Pocket Pistol that works reliably.

I have one that would disprove this point. It's a Taurus PT-145 Millennium Pro and it has never misfired, FTE or FTF in the entire time I've owned it except once when a bad round didn't fire until the second strike. I think that's true because the pistol has never failed to make any other round fire and I've shot many rounds after that one that failed to fire on the first strike. I know that Taurus quality can be hit or miss but the one I have is exceptionally reliable. It's got a better record than my Sig P220 if that tells you anything. I switched to carrying that Taurus when I wanted a smaller gun for CCW and I wanted more capacity. I actually intended to buy a Glock but they must have different style hands in the Glock design department because none of their guns have ever fit my hand well. The Taurus did. The LGS owner gave me a money back, satisfaction guaranteed deal and I have never looked back or regretted buying that pistol for one second. It's accurate too. It is thinner than some single stack 9mm pistols even though it's a double stack .45. I think it was designed on Galifrey (some of you will get that). I couldn't be happier with that pistol.

BUT I still wanted an even smaller carry piece because I have to wear suspenders to keep my pants up when I carry that pistol. So I mostly carry a Ruger LCP in .380 now.

But I wanted a more powerful pistol to carry in the car and to carry on me at times. So I bought a SA XDm in .40S&W. I like the much higher capacity (16+1), the fact that it has more power than a 9mm and keeps the bullet speed (or close anyway) and that there have been developments in the .40 cartridge that makes them the obvious choice for a gun that will be carried in the car.

And this stuff about "old guys" not liking 9's? I owned one about 25 years ago. I wasn't that happy with it. I hear the stuff about the bullets making a 9 just as effective as a .45 and I wonder why no one has developed the bullets for .45's. Surely they have improved just like the 9mm has improved. The main difference in the two is slow speed - heavy bullet in the .45 vs. high speed - light bullet in the 9mm. Yes that "might" make the 9 bullet expand more in limited circumstances but why not combine the best aspects of the .45 and the 9mm? I think that's what the .40 is. It's a bigger bullet that travels at high speed. Sounds like the best of both worlds to me (or something like it anyway).

I still carry my .45's once in a while. But not as often. I just went looking for my holster for my Taurus and I can't find it. I think it must be in the truck and the wife is gone in it. But the fact I don't know exactly where it is says something. It says I carry the .40 a lot more.

My primary carry gun is a S&W 6906 (9mm X12 rounds)

I'm sure someone has already said it but all of the training I've had dictates that if I'm going to fire at all I'm going to fire more than once.

Bearing that in mind I think I'm better off with 12 (+1) 9mm than 7(+1) .45ACP.

It's a coin toss.

I'm not a huge fan of the 9mm. I like single stack guns and 9's are usually double stack if more than 7 or 8 rounds. Each has it's place but 8 is all I want or need.
