Please (don't) talk me out of buying one of these for my Remington 870 slug gun... I really want to shoot my stash of buck and bird shot ammo but don't want to buy another shotgun when I can get one of the aforementioned Carlsons barrels for relatively cheap. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also, since dad and I have our sot, we might get a silencerco salvo to test out if we have a choke thread shotgun...

For a bead sighted CYL 18.5" 870 Barrel... Mossberg's will be hard to beat.

Have one on my 870, as it is currently residing double-duty as a house broom.

They cost a bit more, but I'd look for the aftermarket tubes that extend slightly past the barrel. Much easier to change. If I could only have one, I'd buy Light Modified. It splits the difference between IC and Modified.

Hmm interesting. I'll keep an eye out for one! Thanks!

I was looking at the listings for 870 compatible barrels on eBay and noticed that some, while taking choke tubes, require Winchoke style. As Elmer said, "Be vewwy careful".

Hmm interesting.,. The barrel I got was off gun broker and It says it takes RemChokes in the listing... so I know for sure when it arrives.

Its a good idea. The carlson barrels are very well made and will outlast the receiver. Another option is cdnnsports.com sells a import 18.5 " replacement barrel for $80 and a 28" with vent rib for $90. I've got a couple and while the finish is nowhere as good as OEM or Carlson's, they are mechanically sound.

Just checked. It is the Target Sports brand of barrels for Remingtons that take the Winchester/Browning/Mossberg chokes. Known as Winchoke, Invector

My only shotgun currently (an 870 express, short barrel) has no provision for chokes at present (and probably will not..). Whenever I'm doing any kind of work with threads that will be exposed to corrosive elements - it's always Nev'r Seize for me... Yes, it can be messy if you're over-doing it but long term I've never found any grease better for corrosion problems when you really need that fastener to come loose with a tool... years later. A few tips... I've learned to use thin elastic gloves when working with lubes, glues, or caulking that might stain (or just be difficult to remove when washing up after use), as well as keeping paper towels handy and promptly disposing of them immediately after use... I've had more than one clean up problem from epoxies, permanent sealing caulking, and stuff like Nev're Seize - caused solely by not cleaning up after myself -properly...

There are two kinds of Nev'r Seize - a copper formula for plumbers and an aluminum colored formula for general use. I use the general formula - and still have the original squeeze bottle that I purchase more than forty years ago now -but have to dip into it with a small screw driver as an applicator all these years later with the small amount remaining. Great stuff that allow you to dis-assemble something that's had hard use over many years -and absolutely no maintenance all -other than the original application... hope this helps...

There is a 21" Remchoke barrel for the 870 for their youth models that has a rib. I lucked into one as I prefer the shorter barrels for rabbit or social work.
Hmm interesting. I will try to shoot my 18.5 bead sight barrel soon and give an update on how it does with the modified choke I put in it.

FWIW

Remington made 21 and 23" vent rib Remchoke barrels.
Be careful when buying one for an 870.
There are two types......those for Special Fields and those for regular models.
The Special Fields have a shortened mag tube, so bbl ring is in diff place.

I had an 870 Special Purpose (hardwood not walnut, so first or second yr manufacture) 21" VR Remchoke way back.
Currently run an 870 Express Supermag w 23" VR Remchoke.
Its short enough for turkey but can also work for wingshooting.

Picked up a used Express Supermag 26" bbl vent rib like new for 100 bucks at a shop last yr.
Its better for doves than the 23". Done well w the shorter, but it is easier w the 26". LOL

Proly all the current aftermarket bbls made for standard models.

Note: Hastings a ways back at least made a rifled slug bbl for the 870 Special Field 12.
