So I'm at the final stage now, I printed off the application from the VA State Police site tonight and everything seems to be squared away on my part. But I'm seeing something on the last page that requires a notary to sign off. Is that something someone at the courthouse would be able to do or do I need to go by a bank or something? A bank's is the only place in which I've had dealings with a notary in the past.

Any other advice or tips? I was planning on driving to the circuit court and turning this in in person as it's not too terribly inconvenient.

yes, take it to your bank and get the notary to sign it. That is what I did when I got my VA CCL.

Thanks fella's. That'll delay me one more day but it's been a journey already so what's one more day, I suppose.

Since you both appear to be in VA how long did it take to receive the license once you turned in the forms? The website said something like 45 days max....

Hmmm, I don't remember having to get anything notarized. Is this something new?

EDIT: Ok, did a little research. Now I know why I don't remember. Don't waste your time going to the bank, they'll have you sign in front of them at the courthouse.

12. Where do I get the Concealed Handgun Permit application form?
Right here. You may download the application from this site, from the Virginia State Police web site, or in person at any circuit court clerk’s office. If filling out the form at home, do not sign it until you are in front of a clerk at the circuit court, since it is necessary for them to notarize your signature.

^ Same thing for mine: had to sign it in front of the Sheriff or his designee. Designee was the gal at the window. Don't know if she stamped it with any notary seal later.

A day late and a dollar short....I already went by the bank today and got it signed/stamped there. Oh well.

I guess I'll print off another copy and take it with me. If they won't accept the first one already filled out, signed and notarized then I'll just fill out the second one while I'm there. I assumed they would probably have notaries at the court house but you know what they say about assumptions. I didn't want to drive the 45min to get there only to be told they don't do that.

Anyhoo I'll report back with my findings in case anyone else is interested.

Oh, and none of you VA guys mentioned how long it took once you turned in papers to get the actual permit?

Thanks again...

For future reference: Banks, lawyers' offices, even someplace like Kinko's might have a notary. Look in the yellow pages under "Notary Public." Also, call the courthouse ahead of time to see if they'll notarize it. They may have some policy about notarizing that will monkey things up.

I think the length of time probably varies by counties.

I suspect some county sheriff's might be less enthusiastic then others about issuing CCP.

I was in Fairfax County in 2010. The law says "Shall Issue in 45 days". Mine was postmarked on day 44. Draw your own conclusions.

Now I live in Washington State. It took less then two weeks....

Thanks!

Your point is valid and I could see that in Fairfax. I'm in Hanover so I'm hoping it'll be slightly more expedient.

For the record, last week I needed to get my fictitious business name renewal notarized, called my bank, was told yes they have a notary on duty, got there, waited for the notary, then was told they only notarize documents they originate. So I went to one of those private mailbox places.

I believe your Town Hall will have a notary as well and do it for free if you are a resident of their area.

Welcome to the club. :D

I had just renewed my CCW license when my State passed Constitutional Carry, I'll probably keep it up for reciprocity reasons. That, and they added a stupid little note that those without an actual CCW license need to announce to LE during any contact that they are armed. You can imagine how at ease THAT puts some officers haha.

Just a little update....

The bit that Hanzo posted actually doesn't go into effect until tommorrow. The form I printed off was the older version which still allowed the form to be signed and notarized prior to turning it in. Starting tomorrow everyone will have to sign and have notarized in front of the clerk.

Was told 45 days max but the clerk said that my county normally gets them out in 2-3 weeks. We'll see...

Thanks again!

My State has a law that after 60 days it needs to be approved or denied and we are a Shall Issue State. My first time applying I was told they usually blow past that 60 days. So around day 56 I called and asked the status, the officer said he hadn't gotten to it and it would be a while, I played dumb and asked how I should proceed in another 4 days when I legally was allowed to conceal carry unless they denied me. He grumbled, grabbed my application and in another couple days I got my license in the mail. :)
