Today, while talking to my local Sportsmans Warehouse Rep in Eastern Washington State, and complaining about them not getting any CCI primers in stock, he told me that CCI just laid off workers on the primer assembly line even though they're months behind in inventory. Can you believe that? What's going on???

How did the guy at Sportsmans Warehouse know this? Just courious.

There's so many rumors going around makes me wonder who or what to believe. Another forum says .22's are almost non existence.

This wouldn't be the Sportsman's in Kennewick, would it?

If it was a certain salesman behind the counter, I'd take it w/a grain of salt. I would think CCI is still selling pretty well, so unless they got a problem besides incoming cash flow...

It ain't just CCI . . .

Try to find a primer by Magtech, Remington, Federal, Winchester, cause it ain't happening to date. All the big suppliers claim to be "out." I use MagTech as a guide since it's a great Brazilian-made primer. Akin to an enemy-from-within conspiracy as opposed to a supply and demand problemo, where's the primers! If CCI is laying off workers, it ain't because no primer demand exists. What a screwed-up world we face now! America is a major arms supplier to the world, yet we reloaders can't find a decent source for attaining one crucial component. cliffy

HA! More believable that SW is laying off their workers. SW is in enough trouble of their own. Only thing I've heard about CCI and every other component manufacturer is they can't make things fast enough. I think the entire gun and related industry is the only thing keeping our house of cards economy afloat.:)

How in the world did the U.S. mfg. supply all the components for ammo during the 2nd WW fighting on 2 fronts? And now we can't keep up with the American populace.

Just wondering.

This is the kind of thread that will expand rapidly because people will speculate on speculation. When someone like a store clerk tells you "such and such is laying off people", ask them to prove it with a reliable source. If they can't give you a good answer you can consider them to be a rumor-monger or a flat out liar, (which in many cases is the same thing).

Here is a quote from a member here who goes by deacon8;
(I can't prove this person works at CCI, but have no reason to doubt it.)

"I actually work for ATK (CCI/Speer, Federal, etc, etc). More specifically, I work in the CCI, centerfire primer department in Lewiston, ID. What I DO know is that we are making a lot of primers (forced OT, staffed up, etc) and that there are months worth of orders, as there always are, which we are working to meet. CCI 400's (small rifle) are being made at a much more frequent rate (obviously meaning high demand and increased orders). By "frequent rate," I mean the frequency of days in which they are "ran." "

Note he says "forced OT, staffed up".

Now Dean why are you going to let facts get in the way of a good rumor. The errornet is going to get a bad rap if you start letting facts get in the way.

ps
By the way I also heard federal, winchester, and remington, were all laying people off in their ammo production facilities. The rumor was since the ammo accountability bill was coming they would only be making for the police so they did not need the people. Of course this came from people trying to justify selling winchester value pacs for 60.00 for .45 ACP.

I don't believe in conspiracy theories but man it seems something's up. This is getting worse than the toilet paper shortage Johnny Carson started years ago. Maybe there really this many people hoarding primers & ammo, and maybe I just have to much faith in our society.

I really don't like the doomsday philosophy, I remember living through the Bomb Shelter days of the 50's and do not want to return to those ideals.

I guess there is an old saying that fits THIS TO SHALL PASS

jcwit: I don't put any stock in the conspiracy sausage grinders' tales either. They are started by people who take some joy in gossip, which is a filthy habit, and spread by people of the same ilk.

Something is happening, and it seems a reasonable theory should come fairly easily, to wit:

Say a guy usually buys 2,000-3,000 primers per month. Enough to replace his used up stock, and he normally keeps 10-15k on hand. Now say he "hears" that someone, after a certain date, is going to take away all his shooting fun stuff, and he gets unduly alarmed by this idiotic rumor. Next payday, he takes all his mad money and buys 25,000 primers. He does that for three or four paydays in a row, or maybe for three or four credit card billing cycles.

Now, imagine there are 127,000 other guys out there doing the same thing all of a sudden.

After a few months of that, "someone else" in the guy's household tells him "Knock it off, I wanna start buying food again!", and the guy eases up a bit. Of course, there's another batch of guys who didn't get to spend their wad yet because the first batch bought up all the primers in the initial rush. The second batch have money yet, and as soon as more primers come in, they buy them up 'cause they're still buying into this stupid rumor.

Eventually, all the panic buyers are gonna say "Hey, nothing bad happened!", and they'll quit buying primers. Just like when Clinton got elected.

I'm old enough to remember the toilet paper "shortage" and the first primer "shortage" years ago. It was the first time I remembered paying $18-20 per thousand for primers. Clinton didn't cause it. Shooters caused it because they believed a rumor.

My thoughts exactly! Sportsman's Warehouse has always been one of my favorite stores, and I like the staff at the location that I frequent. But, to be honest, they haven't had much of ANYTHING there in months. This goes well beyond the election scare in my mind, and speaks to problems within the company.

primers are out there. you have to look a little harder right now but the bigger online warehouses have them from time to time it is just that they are easier to access then the smaller mom and pop stores so they are selling out quickly now. Graf's is out. Powder valley has a smattering, some rem and some fed pistol primers and cci br rifle primers

Different sources.

Uncle Sam made their own ammo. They didn't put all their eggs into the commercial business basket. That would be a bad thing.

Examples of DoD/War Department ammo plants (most of which are now defunct):

Lake City, MO - headstamp "LC"

Twin Cities, MN - headstamp "TW"

Frankford, PA - headstamp - "FA"

Eau Claire, WI - headstamp "EC" or "EW"

St. Louis, MO - headstamp "SL"

Denver, CO - headstamp "DEN"

Salt Lake City, UT - headstamp "UT" or "U"

Des Moines, IA - headatamp "DM"

Then there are the commercial companies contracting to Uncle Sam, to include Winchester, Federal, and Remington.

That doesn't include the military facilities that made the ball powder, like Badger Army Ammunition Plant, etc.

Seems like there's a contradiction here.

Primers and ammo in short supply or unavailable. But the mfg. is all caught up and can now lay employes off.

Mayhaps there're all on semi trailers getting shipped.

Yep and a pig just flew by my window.

It's called "cost reduction" and lots of companies are doing it now.

Dumb question--Why would a company reduce mfg. costs by cutting employes and production when there is an increase in sales and unfilled orders. Oh Yeh, there's a depression coming even tho we've got unfilled orders.

Gotta love management.
