CCW and sitting

I'll give the minority opinion, I guess...

I carry appendix (maybe 1:00) because it conceals much easier in my opinion. But I have to admit that I do find it uncomfortable to sit for more than a few minutes. And it isn't even than big a gun...Ruger SP101.

IWB is probably the most uncomfortable for me. I like cross draw because it allows you to get to your firearm in a seated position without having to get up or move awkwardly. Small of back is also very comfortable, but it prints too easily for my taste during warm months and is hard to get to while wearing a jacket in cooler months. So, again...cross draw wins...

CCW and sitting
I know many of you carry when you go out shopping, to the movies, etc. I'm looking to get my CCW soon and I was wondering how comfortable it is to carry and be seated. I suppose I'm really asking those of you who carry on your waist. Does the gun dig into your side? How long can you stay seated before it becomes just too uncomfortable? Do you remove it when you drive? Can you make it through an entire movie?

It all depends on what you get used to. I carry a .357 2" in an inexpensive
soft leather IWB clip on holster at 8:00 (left handed) and carry it all day without any discomfort. I don't even know it's there but I sure notice if I don't have it. Even while driving in a car I feel I can get to my weapon with little or no trouble if I need to. Like I said, you just need to get used to it and it becomes second nature, like putting your wallet or keys in your pocket.
I have several guns in different platforms with a number of holsters but find my snubbie to be the most comfortable for all day and all carry situations.

FWIW, I find Appendix-IWB to be the best over-all carry position. I carry a Glock 19 daily in this position and find it comfortable, concealable, and very fast to draw from.

I don't find it a problem to be seated/driving for long periods carrying in the AIWB position. Holster design has much to do with it, IMO. Not just any IWB holster stuck at 12:30-1:00 will work. I use a Dale Fricke Ehud or ArchAngel, both designed specifically for AIWB use.

I'm 5'11 and 220, so I'm not exactly a rail either.

I find anywhere from 2:45 - 3:15 works best for me. When I sit down, the gun naturally moves into a comfortable spot.

Just depends on what position you carry in. Appendix carry is great for walking around, but gets uncomfortable when you sit down. 3:00-4:00 is comfy for walking, sitting, and bending, but prints easier than appendix carry.

Depends on your shape and size. Tall, medium or short torso, legs etc. Thin, "normal", pudgy or fat. Where is your fat, in the ass, hips, belly etc..... Any infirmaries?

All these things come into play. Life style i.e. police officer, accountant, plumber, waiter, etc.... All these things come into play. Rarely one answer for everyone.

After all that we have to include which weapon the carrier chooses. Some folks change their carry weapon like some of us change socks. I am down to only 75+ guns but still stick to one CCW weapon. When I carried guns for a living there was the service weapon and the off duty weapon, and they were either both 1911's or revolvers in those days.

Today I only CCW. So one gun is all I carry. Any gun I carry to fight with I have at least two of them. (In my life "STUFF" has been known to happen, maybe not in yours). Usually one to carry, and one to shoot, and back up the carry piece. (this is not about my BUG, that hasn't changed, still a "J" frame S&W)

Me, I carry one weapon. When I change my carry weapon it is a big production and commitment. (in addition to above, to carry a piece it has to stand my personal 1000 round "certification" of reliability with zero FTF's.) I take this stuff seriously as at one time in my life it was also a survival skill. Not anymore.

Quality is the watch word. Quality weapons, quality belt (can not emphasize enough the need for a truly quality belt), quality holster, and some common sense.

I have a majority of the holsters mentioned above, Milt Sparks, 4 variants, CrossBreed, CtAC, original Alessie in 4 different variants, TUCK's "the Answer" and silent thunder etc.......... I could buy a lot of guns with the money I have spent on holsters over my 56 years of shooting.

Generally I find IWB in a Horse hide with Shark VM II Milt Sparks, on a Wilderness products Belt works with all my carry guns. When I transitioned from Revolvers to bottom feeders I went to a SIG 228 in the early 90's. Then when the arthritis got bad enough I went back to the 1911, and carried a Springfield Professional modified to my liking, and again because of the arthritis, I am now carrying a HK P30 LEM. Not a lot of choices left for me.

I carry them all at 2:50 to 3 O'Clock. I can sleep in them, I can sit, work, walk. Weight is not an issue (not my now, fat ass, the guns weight with extra loaded magazine, flashlight, folder etc.).

Just when you think you have it down, wait a few years for you younger folks, and your body will change, and so will your carry requirements, etc....

Carrying weapons is not done lightly, or with out it's occasional drama. Enjoy the ride.

Good luck to all.

Fred

PS: I always try to have a back up holster around, in the car or brief case. inspect and clean your holster regularly, just like your weapon. The holster IS part of the system . Over the years I have had holsters break, get damaged, loops tear, loose hardware etc.. Have a plan "B" ready just in case. Kydex loops break or the screws unscrew (Locktite blue only) leather loops tear or get torn, etc.. Be ready. It often happens at the most inopportune times.

Particularly if you don't live in a free State.

I live in Arizona. It doesn't matter if I occasionally print, or my gun is seen. I am lucky in that.

I carry a Sig P250 either IWB or OWB at about the 4 o'clock position and am comfortable when sitting for reasons already stated:

Steps for comfortable belt carry:

1. Get a good holster
2. Get a god belt
3. Keep your waistline in check

Now, I don't have a god belt:), but I do have a very good belt. I think new CCW folks often overlook how important the belt actually is.

It depends what gun/holster/clothing you are using. I know that with a compact gun, a decent IWB holster and loose fitting pants or shorts I can keep it on me comfortably while driving long distances and going to the movies. That said I prefer pocket carry if I'm going to be sitting for a while, because it is especially comfortable.

At first it feels really awkward, but with experience it will become natural.

I don't think any THRer's mentioned ankle carry..... I ankle carry a LCP in a Fobus Elite w/ jeans or dress pants and pocket carry w/ shorts... Disadvantages on drawing but very comfy sitting... (Just watch crossing your legs when ankle carrying....(Been there done that and bought that t-shirt):)

Carrying your primary weapon on your ankle sounds like a supreme disadvantage to me. You would have to go for the draw WAY ahead of time.

One of the few times i dont carry is when at a movie or doin light shopping...etc. But you can over come those comfort issues with a fanny pack and carry what ever you want..

Personally i cant stand carrying IWB or OWB during movies or driving etc..just doesnt work for me.

Soo...when i felt the need, i pocket carried with something like a kel-tech .32

+1 for ankle carrying though. Unless you are preparing for a quick draw show down..and its very fast from a sitting (resturants/movies/sports/etc) position including while driving.

If i go back to carrying a lot..ill probably get an ultra-light .38 and a good ankle holster.

I carry a Taurus 24/7 9mm in a Tagua IWB at 3:00 and only rarely do I have any problems. I just took a car trip from MS to Dallas (550 mles) and was never uncomfortable while driving or riding.

Seriously?

Buy quality gear and choose your pistol properly and it isn't an issue.

I just made a 1665 mile round trip in a compact car (Saturn ION, and I'm not a small guy) wearing a CrossBreed SuperTuck, A Tucker double IWB mag carrier, a BeltMan bull-hide belt, and a Walther PPS with two extra mags. I started out with the reloads stashed, ended up putting the reloads back on for comfort from balance and symmetry. Driving was in three legs with long stops at each destination ... longest leg was over 700 miles, about 12 hours counting stops.

BeltMan you can find pictures of on your own, I assume, here's a link:

I just ordered a horsehide belt from them due to my extreme satisfaction with my bullhide version.

I don't worry about comfort, I don't worry about exposure in even the most carry-unfriendly environments, unless there's patdowns + metal detection, I'm good to go with an untucked woven shirt for cover.

Ankle carry, gunderwear, and all the silly ways to strap on a mousegun in a hard-to-retrieve way seem sort of silly once you have a good IWB rig and the right gun. If you need to wear your pistol next to your junk, perhaps you have the wrong pistol or the wrong carry gear. If you think you can retrieve, aim, and fire a ankle-size gun with any speed, I hope you practice a lot and please do post a video of effective use of an ankle gun from non-ideal starting conditions (like a Tueller drill, perhaps).

Extra bonus from the Tucker carrier, I managed to bend a clip (amusingly, while at a movie with some nephews) and 5 minutes with the hotel hair-dryer fixed it, the clips are Kydex and I'm now considering picking up some spare Kydex clips for the holster, or at least traveling with the spare steel one I left at home like a moron.

I carry a Sig229 .40 in a DeSantis IWB at 1 O'Clock. Any other position on my waste would be uncomfortable in the car, and possibly print.

When I'm on vacation, or site-seeing I use a small fanny pack that I carry in the 2 O'Clock position. I usually have a brochure, ticket, receipt etc. in the mesh on the outside of the fanny pack to make it look extra touristy.

hope this helps
